Things I learned During My First Semester of Teaching

learned during teaching

This semester I taught my first class. The topic? Theatrical Sound Design. I learned a lot from teaching this class. Some were surprises and others were more reaffirming than new knowledge. As a way to reflect on some of these observations, I would like to share them with my readers.

Brittany Moss: Ballet Dancer and Teacher – Theatre People

Brittany Moss

A new week, Theatre People! This week I’d love to introduce you to Brittany Moss. In 2019 and part of 2020, just before COVID hit, Brittany and I were working on an exciting new show for her ballet company, Hansel and Gretel. This was one of my favorite projects, and even as the pandemic hit, we kept pounding away on the projection design with high hopes it would hit the stage. I’m sorry to say that the project withered, but I was so grateful for the time working on it.

I hope you enjoy my interview with Jeff as much as I did. Another week closer to fully open stages, people—keep your chins up!

Josh Belk: Teacher and Director – Theatre People

Josh Belk

Hello again, TheatrePeople! This week I’m so happy to introduce you to a true ‘TheatrePeople’ person, Mr. Josh Belk. I met Josh years ago when I was living in Colorado, and you’d be hard pressed to find a grander theatre enthusiast. And even more so, a teacher who is dedicated to giving his students a rich, lifelong experience in the arts. Josh had to point out to me recently that I had featured one of his former students, who is now a theatre teacher herself, in TheatrePeople before him—all in good fun, of course! However, it’s beyond overdue for you to meet Josh.

Kristina Cummins: Theatre Educator – Theatre People

Kristina Cummins

Welcome back to TheatrePeople for another week! I am so happy to introduce you to theatre teacher Kristina Cummins. Career Success? Audio Engineers – How Do You Measure That?

I’ve been working as an audio engineer in Australia since 1997. When I meet young sound engineers starting out, particularly women, I am inspired by their passion and fearless attitude towards forging a career in this very challenging industry, particularly in a country like Australia where the market for audio professionals is pretty small. The same questions and fears that I faced working in a male-dominated industry still confront women today. I want to share my story to illustrate how a career in sound can take many paths, but the key ingredients for longevity are the same today as they were 25 years ago.

Starting Over In A New City: Part 2

starting over TheatreArtLife

For the last week I have stared at a computer screen with the lyrics “Who am I anyway, am I my resume” playing on repeat in my head. This iconic musical theatre song has always been a favorite of mine because it spoke so much truth and now it is ringing truer than ever. As […]

Starting Over In A New City: Part 1

Starting Over

So, the countdown has begun to the day my family packs the moving truck and heads from Atlanta to Kansas City. We have been planning this move for a year now but now that the date is rapidly approaching I am starting to feel the effects that this move makes on my career in the theatre business.

The Digital Age Of Private Lessons

Digital Age

It seems with so much of our lives lived on a device or computer screen that it was only a matter of time before things like voice and acting lessons went digital. A trend started a few years ago of private lessons via Skype, FaceTime or other video chat programs. I have to say that I was a little skeptical of such methods.
