Afghanistan faced a major backlash to a new law, with the #IAmMySong campaign resulting in the government reversing a ban on girls over 12 singing in public, implemented on 10th March 2021. Issued by Kabul’s Ministry of Education, the ban would have meant that girls aged 12 and up could not sing in public arenas, which would include any participation in singing the National Anthem of Afghanistan.

Once a high school athlete who hoped to go pro, Dane Reis, learned how to pivot early on due to body injuries and surgeries. What started out as a favor to a friend of his sister, ended up being a long-time love and career. Mr. Reis is a successful actor, stage manager, and now host of his own podcast, where he talks with show business professionals. He chose to get on the other side of the interview and answered a few questions for me.

More Than Line-by-Line: Mixing Sound

When I started mixing sound for shows in high school—and I use the term “mixing” loosely—I had no idea what I was doing. Which is normal for anyone’s first foray into a new subject, but the problem was that no one else knew either. My training was our TD basically saying, “here’s the board, plug this cable in here, and that’s the mute button,” before he had to rush off to put out another fire somewhere else.
