Matt: A recent NY Times article got some traction with this headline, Remember: What You Do Is Not Who You Are.

Sound Design: Preconceptions in Human Hearing
As sound designers we often have to fight against what something actually sounds like, and what audiences expect things to sound like. For example, an authentic phone ring might not necessarily fit the tone of the piece, and actually a phone from a different era would suffice in creating urgency and tonality.

Once again, I’m in rehearsal and there’s a delay as an actor stops midline and says, “Why do I say this? I just can’t wrap my head around it. What is the character’s motivation?” While the cast waits, the actor and director analyze beats, given circumstances, affective memories, and what-ifs.
