This week, I traveled from Zurich to Oslo to venture Underwater with Ludovico Einaudi. I had looked forward to this concert for months. And, in the weeks leading up to the event, I became quite neurotic. Attempting to avoid all contact with other human beings so as not to lose the opportunity to see him live due to coming down with Covid. I managed to stay healthy, and there I was, on April 11th, ready to be taken on a musical odyssey.
It has been long known that social media can be an asset to sell products, promote a business, and help an artist grow. But the process is quite crafty and takes time. There are many people who don’t know which steps to take, therefore becoming frustrated and not trustingthe process. This leads to giving up and not giving social media a chance. However, there is evidence that social media can be a great tool to utilize when connecting with other like-minded people and sharing a passion for something like art.
Edinburgh International Festival returns with the first full programme since the 2020 and 2021 events were cancelled. Taking place from 5 – 28 August, tickets go on sale from 8 April. The 2022 event celebrates 75 years of the festival, complete with world premieres, bold collaborations and world-renowned artists in Edinburgh’s iconic theatres and concert halls.
Many classical musicians have been dedicated to their craft since childhood: they’ve spent thousands of hours perfecting their playing technique, studying theory and harmony and history of music, taking lessons with awe-inspiring (and occasionally fear-inducing) professors, and developing a richness of sound that can fluctuate deftly between dramatic passion and subtle nuance, to make even the most hardened of hearts shed a tear of emotion at such sonic beauty! How do we capture in audio the complex compositions of classical music and the natural resonance of these acoustic instruments, and do justice to the sound that classical musicians and singers have worked so hard to create? Goodbye overdubs and hardcore effects processing: classical music recording and production is generally all about finding the most flattering acoustic space to record in, and capturing the musical instrument or voice in a way that best brings out its natural sonic qualities.

The Bregenz Festival is a performing arts festival which is held every July and August in Bregenz, in Vorarlberg (Austria). It features a large floating stage which is situated on Lake Constance. Said stage is legendary for having some of the most elaborate, creative, and outlandish set designs out there. Last year, the festival celebrated its 75th anniversary.
The Zurich Opera House is one of the best in the world and was named Opera House of the Year at the 2014 International Opera Awards. It is located at the Sechseläutenplatz, a big square right in front of the Opera House which is used for all kinds of cultural festivities throughout the year. The Zurich Opera House has been home of the Zurich Opera since 1891. It also houses the Bernhard-Theater Zurich as well as the Zurich Ballet.

The opera Sleepless is based on a book by Norwegian author Jon Fosse. It was adapted for the opera by Hungarian composer Peter Eötvös and director Kornél Mundruczó. The astounding Sleepless does not only offer an intriguing and rather unusual set design. The opera is also a thought-provoking modern take on the classical story of Maria and Joseph. In it, a heavily pregnant woman and her partner are refugees seeking shelter in an unwelcoming foreign land.
Getting any show up and running is hard. Layers upon layers of new information are being added to the piece once the actors move from the rehearsal space to the performance venue, and it’s all happening very quickly. As a show’s A1, I am hard at work preparing my script, generating paperwork, programming the console, and in some cases also working as a hand on the shop build and/or load-in. Design elements are coming together throughout the tech process. Ideas are tried, then retooled, and tried again. However, one thing that usually isn’t changing is the actual script of the show.
