Channel 4 Embraces Inclusion During Winter Paralympics

Usually, the Paralympic games were presented by regular presenters. This year, Channel 4 has taken an important step towards inclusion and has instead assembled an entire all-star disabled presenting team for the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games. This is not just a first for Channel 4 itself, but a global first for a broadcaster at a world-class sporting event in general.

Peter Royston, he/him/his is an equity stage manager based in New York and originally from the Bay Area. His credits include Blue Man Group, The Public Theater, The Lark, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, San Jose Repertory Theatre, and TheatreWorks among many others since 2017. Peter has become a vocal advocate and ally to the disabled community, specifically through his lived experiences as a white gay man with cerebral palsy.

Gosh, there is a lot of information to take on board at the moment. There is just so much going on. Everywhere. It feels that we are now based on the internet and not in the real world at all. I’ve now been living in isolation for four months due to the global pandemic. Quite an experience fraught with both challenges and opportunities. Opportunities for meaningful change if only the right voices can be heard in the right places.
