As the Omicron variant surges through the United States, some Broadway shows are opting for a temporary closure instead of cancelling performances or closing the show entirely. Mrs. Doubtfire, The Girl from the North Country and To Kill a Mockingbird have all announced temporary closures until spring in order to wait out the Omicron surge. However, Broadway unions are worried that this is not only a way to avoid losing money, but a way to avoid paying artists.

Costume Designer William Ivey Long Accused of Sexual Harassment

William Ivey Long

Award-winning costume designer William Ivey Long has been accused of sexual abuse, according to a report by NPR. Court Watson and Michael Martin allege that Long sexually abused them while they were in college working on a summer production in North Carolina called The Lost Colony around 20 years ago. These accusations follow Martin’s accusations in a 2018 BuzzFeed News piece. NPR also unearthed a 2002 lawsuit against Roanoke Island Historical Association, producing company of The Lost Colony, filed by former production manager Mary Elizabeth Stewart, which includes reports of other sexual misconduct allegations against Long.

Broadway’s return was further celebrated this past Sunday, October 3, as the 35th Annual Broadway Flea Market and Grand Auction returned to Shubert Alley in NYC to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Together, they compared the work conditions of Stage Managers working in both regions and around the world. Drawing on their own experiences as stage manager as well as looking at a 2019 survey, their findings are profound and of imminent importance. On Sunday, September 26, the long-awaited 74th Annual Tony Awards aired, promising a new theatre industry that is equitable and accountable. Showing a triumphant return to Broadway, the two-part ceremony was to celebrate an industry gone from a year and a half. In that year and a half, however, social change begun. The insurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement made its way to the Great White Way, which has been telling its many workers that big change is coming to the industry, and that it will come out as a better Broadway.
