The Vault Festival in London has been running for 11 years and featured more than 3,000 shows during that time period. But, as of 1 September, the Vault Festival team has announced that the festival will not be going ahead in 2024.
“We’re aware that a huge community of artists are eagerly awaiting news on the opening of applications for VAULT Festival 2024. We’ve been holding out as long as we can, but it’s time to get real with you. The VAULT Festival in February and March 2024 won’t be going ahead.”
The Vault Festival has entertained more than 400,000 audience members during their 11 year run. The announcement was unfortunately not shocking as a statement made earlier this year in February from their team stated that they needed to raise funds by the end of the 2023 festival as well as find a new home. Their venue landlord was looking at more commercial projects and would be evicting the festival from its normal habitat. With the Vault Festival’s announcement, they did address this issue.
“We’re still searching for our new home and whist we are (hopefully) getting closer to that, we’re now at t a point where the timeline for a VAULT Festival in February and March is unfeasible. We really wanted to bring you better news, and we’re aware that the loss of the VAULT Festival again will have a huge impact on the development and trajectory of new work and early career artists, but right now, we just don’t have the space or time to make it happen.”
What does this mean for the local favourite festival going forward? The festival’s team has decided to continue with their work-in-progress festival A Pinch of VAULT which will take place at The Glitch and additional venues in the Waterloo and South Bank areas of London. This will be going ahead during the usual time of the Vault Festival in February and March in place of the larger festival. This will allow artists opportunities for their works-in-progress to still be seen by audiences without the pressure (or publicity) of a larger scale to work on.
“Following this, and if all goes well with our venue search, we’re hoping to deliver VAULT Festival 2024 in Autumn next year, with applications opening in early 2024. More information on this will be forthcoming.”
This is by no means a guarantee for artists that their shows will be accepted by either the work-in-progress or the (hopeful) later VAULT Festival. The festival’s team have made no announcements as to what they plan to do if they cannot find a venue to call home by their intended time frame. Unfortunately, considering the festival team was looking for a Grants Manager as recently as late August, it is likely the festival will not be happening in the hopeful prediction of late 2024. If the Vault Festival cannot come back by late next year, it is presumable that the festival will struggle to come back at all.
