There are no small parts, only small children.
It’s Summer, that all too familiar time when all of us would get up to no good. So what would our parents do? They would send us away to camp to be someone else’s problem. Some people went to overnight camps where they met their long lost twin and switched lives, some people went to religious based camps, and some went to band camp where there was that one time… Then there’s theatre camp and those who were brave enough to attend. Now, someone has threatened to buy the place and shut it down. Welcome to Theatre Camp: The Movie.
You have 3 weeks to prove the greatness that you know the camp has. You have 3 weeks to become a miniature Broadway star. As stated clearly in the upcoming movie,
“We’re theater people. We know how to make cardboard into gold.”
This inspiring comedic movie will likely provide plentiful laughter and fond memories for all who, at one point in their lives, went to the somewhat controlled chaos that is theatre camp.
“You think this is fun and games? It’s not fun. It’s art.”
The simple camp setting in the film feels natural and is filled with vibrant child actors who easily characterise all the different groups who attend a theatre camp. For instance, you will always have the dancers who are constantly stretching, evening in the dining hall. The prop makers who will turn anything into a lightsaber duel or hide behind the cardboard cities like they are actually in a war zone. The ensemble kids who try to be good at everything just a little too much. And of course the ones made sure there was drama everywhere at all times just so they could be sure to be a part of it.
“These people are really weird.”
Yes, all theatre kids are weird. That doesn’t go away with time as we grow up either. The cast illustrate that at no matter what age, you’re still a theatre kid. The comedy will easily make you reminiscent of a time where theatre camp was the most exciting thing to look forward to in the summer months. It even shows you the craziness before and after the rehearsals, the dance parties, the constant running 0f lines, and of course the curtains rising for opening night.
Theatre Camp: The Movie is the winner of the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award: Ensemble at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Starring the Tony Award winner Ben Platt and his counterpart Molly Gordon, Theatre Camp: The Movie will tell the story of life-long best friends who have become drama instructors at a rundown camp in upstate New York. When clueless tech-bro Troy arrives to run the property, the staff band together with the students, bringing together a masterpiece to keep their beloved summer camp alive and well. The trailer is officially out and Theater Camp: The Movie is set to premiere on the 14th of July, 2023 with a run time of 94 minutes.
