What is your favourite scene in the show and why?

My favourite scene in the show is Dead Mom. It is my favourite scene because it is the first time Lydia shows her true inner feelings despite how she has been living in her own world ever since her beloved mom passed away. She is not simply in mourning or talking about how she misses her mom. It rather feels like her strong declaration that Lydia will now step out to achieve something. I love how the music also escalates accordingly.

<Dead Mom>이다. 사랑하는 엄마가 돌아가신 후, 자기만의 세계 속에 갇혀 사는 리디아가 처음으로 진심 어린 속내를 드러내는 장면이라 가장 좋아한다. 마냥 슬퍼하고 그리워하는 것이 아니라, 앞으로 자신이 나서서 뭔가를 해내겠다는 리디아의 당찬 선언처럼 느껴져 더욱 그렇다. 그에 따라 고조되는 음악의 흐름도 너무 좋다.

What are the top three skills you need for your role?

Stamina, stamina, stamina! Beetlejuice is a musical that has a very dynamic stage setting. The ever changing stage sets require quick action. When you see the performance by our dance troupe of clones and the dead, you will definitely understand why I am emphasizing ‘stamina’. As much as it is a challenging scene, it is a beautiful and fancy scene!

체력, 체력, 체력! <비틀쥬스>는 다이내믹한 무대 연출이 정말 멋있는 작품이다. 시시각각 변화하는 무대 전환에 맞춰 빠른 대응이 필요하고, 비틀쥬스와 그의 클론, 망자들과 함께하는 군무 씬을 보시면 왜 “체력”인지 이해가 되실 거다. 힘든 만큼 정말 화려하고 멋지다!

What would be your advice for anyone who wants to do what you do?

Do not be afraid of failure! I think it is important to turn failures into my own data base.

실패를 두려워하지 말자! 실패도 나의 데이터로 만들 줄 아는 게 중요한 거 같다.

Who is the colleague that makes you laugh the most and why?

That colleague would be actress Nahyun Hong who is playing the same role. I think we find each other to be adorable. We also think similarly about a lot of things and as we practice, she is a great colleague that I can discuss my weaknesses with and rely on.

같은 역할을 맡은 홍나현 배우이다. 우리는 서로가 서로를 귀여워하는 사이랄까? 말이 너무 잘 통하고, 연습하면서 서로의 부족한 부분을 같이 얘기하고 의지할 수 있는 동료이다.

What was it like to be one of the only shows that remained open during the height of the pandemic?

I am forever grateful for every single audience that has come to see our musical even in such difficult times. Although I am not able to hear the roaring cheer in voice (because we ask audiences to refrain from cheering or shouting too much as a courtesy to other audience members), I am always thankful for the warm applause and try to show my best performance every time. It is terrible that the COVID-19 situation is still ongoing. As an audience myself, I sincerely hope that we could be able to watch a variety of shows on stage in the near future.

이러한 상황 속에서도 극장을 찾아준 관객 한 분 한 분이 너무도 소중하고 감사하다. 육성으로 나오는 뜨거운 환호를 들을 순 없지만, 따뜻한 박수 세례에 힘입어 매회 최선을 다하고자 노력한다. 코로나 상황이 좀처럼 진정되지 않아 너무도 안타까운데, 나도 한 명의 관객으로서 하루빨리 다양한 작품들을 무대 위에서 만나고 싶다.

How did you continue to lift morale for the team while ensuring everyone’s health and safety?

Since it is difficult to talk in person nowadays, I try to ask about how everyone is doing through text messages and try to send encouraging messages.

요즘에는 대면으로 이야기하는 게 조심스럽다 보니, 문자 메시지로 서로의 안부를 자주 묻고 나의 마음을 전달한다.

Tell us one thing about yourself that you learned during the pandemic?

There are so many variables in this world today. Regardless of my efforts and willpower, there are many unexpected situations occurring to external variables. Who would have predicted such worldwide pandemic? However as we have always done, we will find an answer! There have been different measures that address the current pandemic situation even in theaters. Although it is still strange that these changes have been adopted, we have become used to many parts of this as well. I believe that we will be able to learn a valuable lesson through these experiences if we take bold steps like Lydia, regardless of the external situation like how she does in <Beetlejuice>.

이 세상에는 너무 많은 변수가 존재한다. 나의 노력, 의지와는 달리 외부적인 요인으로 예기치 못한 상황이 발생하곤 한다. 전세계를 뒤흔든 팬데믹으로 세상이 이렇게 바뀔 줄 누가 알았겠는가. 하지만 늘 그렇듯, 우리는 답을 찾을 것이다! 공연장에도 코로나 시대에 맞춘 대응법들이 생겨났고, 아직은 낯설지만 어느새 익숙해진 부분도 있다. <비틀쥬스>의 리디아처럼 외부적인 상황에 굴하지 않고 나의 길을 꿋꿋이 걸어 나간다면, 그 속에서 또 다른 무언가를 배우게 될 것이다.
