Some of the best known musicals coming to the UK in 2024 are new and returning fan favourites. A portion of these musicals are transfers from Broadway in New York but there are a few that will be making their world premiere with their sights set high.
The much anticipated Mean Girls The Musical will be at the Savoy Theatre. This will be the musical’s premiere for the U.K., but Mean Girls The Musical had been on Broadway in New York since April 2018 but closed due to the pandemic in 2020. The show has been touring the U.S. since 2019 and was expected to open on London’s West End in 2021 but unfortunately was delayed due to the same pandemic. The production is currently set to run shows from 5 June until 27 October 2024.
Continuing the musical variation of a movie, Burlesque the musical was announced only last year, 2023, but fans have been hastily counting down until they can buy tickets. Coming from the inspiring film back in 2010, the musical variation will include both songs from the film and new originals from Christina Aguilera, Jess Foley, and Todrick Hall. Casting has yet to be confirmed but the show is currently selling tickets from 13 June to 29 June 2024 at the Manchester Opera House. Although it is not confirmed, the show is expected to extend its run.
Another highly anticipated movie adaptation that is coming to the stage is The Devil Wears Prada musical. Showcasing at the Dominion Theatre, the show had its successful premiere in late July in Chicago, Illinois. The Devil Wears Prada features music by Sir Elton John with lyrics by Shaina Taub. The show has yet to announce a cast, but will begin performances from 24 October until 31 December 2024.
The last movie to stage rework is the U.K. and Ireland tour of 101 Dalmatians. Originally showcased in 2022, 101 Dalmatians is set to take off on its first tour. A musical version of the beloved children’s book toured the U.S. in 2009, which was a separate take from Disney’s 1961 movie familiarisation. The tour will begin 22 June and run to 23 November 2024.
As did the predecessor, the man himself, MJ The Musical instantaneously rose to stardom. Due to this, it’s no surprise that the production will be transferring from Broadway to the West End at the Prince Edward Theatre. Originally set to premiere in mid-2020, MJ The Musical had its first audience in early February 2022 and has had mixed reviews but done exceptional in the box office with several awards already under its single white glove. By the end of last year, the production had over one million attendances and grossed $162.5 million. The show also brought in 4 Tony Awards. Throughout 2023, the production set off on a North American tour and announced the show would premiere across the world going to the West End in 2024, Hamburg in 2024, and Sydney in 2025.
