The Lord of the Rings will have its US Premiere this summer in Chicago! Titled “The Lord of the Rings- A Musical Tale”, the show will be collaborating with the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. The production is rumoured to have a full cast with ensemble and large-scale puppets to help bring the story to life. Could this be the show potentially heading for Broadway or a Middle Earth world tour?
The Lord of the Rings- A Musical Tale had it’s world premiere only last summer, less than a year ago and has become a fan favourite. Premiering at The Watermill Theatre in Newbury, the show sold out its 12-week run. Based off of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Trilogy the story is told from the perspective of the Hobbits. The musical follows Frodo on his adventure across Middle-Earth to the darkest depths of Mordor to save everyone from Dark Lord Sauron. He sets off on this quest with a few helpful friends after being given a gift from his uncle Bilbo Baggins. This gift turns out to be his most prized possession, a gold ring- the one ring to rule them all.

Director of The Lord of the Rings, Paul Hart stated:
“We loved welcoming audiences from across the world to the Shire to experience our intimate yet epic production of The Lord of the Rings, and to introduce them to our corner of West Berkshire. Now we’re setting off on our own “there and back again” journey to Chicago and we can’t wait to work with the brilliant team at Chicago Shakespeare Theater to recreate the wonder of Middle-earth for new audiences.”

Middle-Earth Enterprises is in full support of the journey continuing on to Chicago as they gave a public statement saying:
“Sharing The Watermill’s wonderful expression of The Lord of the Rings on stage with audiences across the globe beginning this summer, in Chicago, with the U.S. premiere of Paul Hart’s and the Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s collaborative re-imagining, is a dream come true for all of us at Middle-earth Enterprises.”

This is not the first time such an adventure has been taken by a stage production of The Lord of the Rings. Originally the show made it’s debut at the Prince of Wales Theatre in Toronto in 2006 and transferred to London’s West End the next year. However, the show quickly closed in 2008. A revival was announced with high hopes for a world tour in 2015 but fans were let down once more as nothing came of such a promise.
The Lord of the Rings- A Musical Tale is currently set to run from 19 July to 1 September this year. The show has already won the WhatsOnStage Award for ‘Best Regional Production’, and eight Broadway World Awards. The Lord of the Rings will not only mark its US premiere but also the inaugural season of Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s Artistic Director, Ed Hall and Executive Director, Kimberly Motes.
