The first official trailer for the long-awaited Wicked film dropped a few days ago. Along with the trailer, we got a first look at iconic pieces and characters and how actors will be portraying them. Here is everything we know about the Wicked film so far.
Taking ideas and concepts from the original motion picture The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Wicked, the long running Broadway musical, we see childhood characters come to life on the big screen once again. The film is currently set to release later this year on 27 November in the USA. Following a plot similar to the Wicked musical, we see Elphaba (played by Cynthia Erivo) first entering Shiz University in the magical land of Oz. She quickly runs into Galinda (played by Ariana Grande) who is forced to be Elphaba’s roommate at the university. The two powerhouses form an unlikely bond and grow together as friends through their time in school. The two leading ladies are adorned in classic costumes from the Broadway show in the trailer with Galinda dressed to the nines in pretty pink and Elphaba already set as the outcast in her traditional black dress.
After a meeting with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, one of them is seduced by power and the other remains true to their beliefs. Their paths cross again later when one is officially the Wicked Witch of the West…
The film will feature the Oscar winning Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University’s headmistress Madame Morrible. Playing the dashing Fiyero is Jonathan Bailey (credits include Bridgerton and Fellow Travelers). There is no one better fit to bring Boq to life than Tony nominee Ethan Slater (Broadway’s Spongebob Squarepants). Of course the legendary Wizard of Oz who rules over the Emerald City and all its citizens can only be portrayed by someone just as large as life itself, so it would go to Jeff Goldblum. Elphaba’s beloved sister Nessarose will be played by Marissa Bode who is making her feature film debut.
The film will be in two parts with Wicked Part Two currently set to fly into theatres on 26 November, 2025 in the USA. Both part one and two are directed by Jon M. Chu (In the Heights) with a budget of $145 million. The film is produced by Marc Platt (La La Land, The Little Mermaid) and multi-Tony winner David Stone who Platt produced the blockbuster Wicked stage musical with. Platt’s films, t.v. shows and stage productions have earned a combined 46 Oscar nominations, 58 Emmy nominations and 36 Tony nominations. The executive producers are David Nicksay, Stephen Schwartz and Jared LeBoff.
The film is loosely based on the bestselling novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked is adapted for the screen by the stage production’s book writer Winnie Holzman and by legendary Grammy and Oscar winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz. The Broadway stage musical is produced by Universal Stage Productions, Marc Platt, the Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone. Wicked originally debuted on Broadway on 10 June, 2003.
