It’s more than slightly difficult to find support as a female in the industry. I mean that in any form of the entertainment industry, whether it be live events or film or corporate or something else. Finding an entire company run by and supported by females who know what you’re going through? Unheard of, hell impossible even. Not anymore thanks to Crew Gal’s launch.
“No matter the event, we can provide well trained, reliable and friendly crew who will help to create a safe, efficient and inclusive atmosphere on site. Whether you are looking for crew to help with stage builds, sound engineers, lighting engineers, drivers, runners or any other role- get in touch for availability and a quote on hiring members of our crew.”
Crew Gal officially launched on 30 March of this year. The female-run company has been holding training events for those who wish to learn and seek advice on where to start as well as receive more in-depth training since 18 May. The company specialises in live music and the arts while maintaining dedication to touring sustainability and marginalised communities in the industry’s technical spaces. They have literally taken matters into their own hands since much of the traditional industry spaces have failed them.
Crew Gal also offers other services and insights. They have a consultancy service to work beside the employing companies who decide to use Crew Gal’s trained team. Allowing this positive change in the industry strategically optimises the creativity companies like Crew Gal offers with a bright outlook for the future of the industry. Crew Gal has started a podcast as well that you can listen to from their website or on the streaming service Spotify. The female run and female supported company have already made a splash by supplying crew for the first Coast Festival and appearing on the panel of ‘Fixing The Pipeline’ powered by Moving The Needle UK and Generatone. Crew Gal held a workshop titled ‘Making the Most of Soundcheck’ that aided in seeing what everyone needs from it, from the musicians to the technicians. Crew Gal ran sound for the entire event as well!
Their founder, Susan French is also the Director of live events training company Susan French Events Ltd. She has over 25 years of experience in the live events industry. Her main goal with both companies is to close the gap between genders in the industry and increase equality in more backstage and behind the scenes roles. To accomplish this, she has founded Crew Gal and through the company is offering training, career development, and healthcare support for women. For venues and tours who wish to do the same, Crew Gal offers consultation to aid in the safety and wellbeing of women as well as other marginalised groups within the industry.
