The moment so many of us have craved is finally here, after 13 years! Burlesque, the movie that helped put Christina Aguilera on the charts, is getting a stage adaptation from those who worked very closely on the film. Christina Aguilera is the one spearheading the production of the upcoming stage adaptation. The film’s Director, Steven Antin, is reportedly writing the new soon-to-be musical himself.
The original movie released back in 2010 with a star studded cast including Grammy winner Christina Aguilera and her 24 Academy Award winning co-star, Cher. The movie followed Aguilera’s character (Ali) who moved to Los Angeles, California from a small town to follow her big dreams of being a singer. On her first night in town she found herself at a burlesque club owned by Cher’s character (Tess). To quote the film, “She just picked up a tray and started working.” Cher’s character soon realised she saw much of herself in the young girl and her big dreams and let her audition to dance for the club. The movie featured other stars including Kristin Bell (Nikki), Eric Dane (Marcus), Cam Gigandet (Jack), Julianne Hough (Georgia), and Stanley Tucci (Sean).
Although a date has yet to be announced, Burlesque: The Musical as it has been titled, has been confirmed to make its stage debut in the United Kingdom. It will reportedly remain very true to the original story, even featuring many of the songs from the original album. However, the new Burlesque stage adaptation will also introduce new songs to be featured by Todrick Hall and Jess Foley. Todrick Hall confirmed his involvement in an Instagram post he recently made stating:
“I’ve been secretly working on this for the past year! I guess the cat is out of the bag! Can’t wait for you all to hear the new tunes I’ve been creating!”
Steven Antin’s sister, Robin Antin, a choreographer, is also rumoured to be working on the project very closely with her brother.
“Working 24/7 on this beautiful new venture…”
Although the original cast members of the movie have yet to make any official announcements regarding the breaking news about the Burlesque stage adaptation, fans from all over are going wild with excitement that the cult classic amongst the LGBTQ+ community is finally getting the spotlight it has always deserved.
Burlesque is not the only film getting a stage adaptation revival. 13 Going on 30 also recently announced a musical adaptation for the stage is in the works set to launch sometime in the Summer of 2025. Although few details have since been confirmed.
