Bad Cinderella has announced a closing date on Broadway. The cast will make their final bows on June 4th at the Imperial Theatre in New York City. The official announcement of the closing date was actually made public by Playbill before the cast and crew were told and the company could make an official announcement themselves first.
A principal cast member, Julio Rey (@julio.iguana on Instagram) publicly called Playbill out for announcing the news before the company was even notified. He states it was “rude and disrespectful” of the large theatre company to make such news public knowledge through social media. Julio made his Broadway and Principal Role debut in Bad Cinderella as he plays Prince Sebastian in the show. Other cast members of the show have already started reaching out to fans and fellow cast members about their sorrows and heartbreak about the show ending so soon. Condolences to those who have to go through closing down a Broadway show they put so much effort and work into after the show just opened March of this year, 2023.
This is unfortunately not the first time an entire show gets told about their closing by social media.
In fact, the same show found out the very same thing the very same way just last year.
Bad Cinderella, or just Cinderella as it was called on the West End, had a shockingly similar run-in with their closing as well. The only thing different this time was which social media was used to find the announcement.
The cast and crew of the West End show found out through Twitter, while the Broadway company found out through Instagram.
Many cast members of the West End version also took to arms on social media saying “No one. NO ONE should find out a job is no longer going ahead on social media. END. OF” quoted from Alice Fearn who was going to be part of the recast when she heard the news. Both versions of the show’s current cast members seemed to either find out through social media, other cast members, or their agents after the news of the closings were made public.
Even the timings of the announcements of the closings are almost indistinguishable. The West End company of Cinderella had their show announce a closing date of June 12th, 2022 with the announcement made early May 2022. Almost exactly a year later, another closing of Bad Cinderella will commence on June 4th, 2023 and the announcements of this closing were made early/mid May, 2023.
Although the show received split reviews from audiences and no Tony Award nominations, many big names were involved in the making of Bad Cinderella including Andrew Lloyd Webber and David Zippel.
With the closing of Bad Cinderella on Broadway this will be the first time since 1979 that Broadway goes without the famous composer’s musicals on its historic street.
While David Zippel’s producing talents live on in the Off-Broadway spoof SPAMILTON.
Tragically for everyone’s involvement in the show, the ball must come to an end.
