This year, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry have announced the Tony Award nominations! These two have quickly become household names within theatre communities worldwide. Even though 28 Tony Award nominations went to shows that have already closed their doors, a record has been broken by an underdog. The Tony Award is Broadway’s biggest honour to achieve and there are several stellar nominees in the mix who are up for the award.

Stereophonic has received 13 Tony Award nominations this year, breaking the previous record of 12 nominations by Slave Play back in 2020. However, the record for most nominated show ever is still held by Hamilton.
The nominations for Stereophonic include: Best Play, Best Original Score, Best Performance by an Actor in a Play (with three actors up for the nomination), Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role (with two actresses up for the nomination), Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design , Best Lighting Design, Best Sound Design, Best Direction, and Best Orchestrations.

Will Brill, Eli Gelb, and Tom Pecinka are all nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Play for their roles in Stereophonic. Will Brill plays Reg with Eli Gelb playing Grover and Tom Pecinka as Peter. Juliana Canfield features as Holly alongside her other nominee Sarah Pidgeon who plays Diana. The shows opening night was only a few weeks ago on 19 April and is currently set to have their final performance on 7 July this year. With so many Tony Award nominations, it’s possible the show may extend their run as they continue to explore rock and roll.

Matching the 13 nominations is Hell’s Kitchen. Luckily the show only shares one nomination with Stereophonic. It’s possible that this year the most nominated shows will also be the most awarded shows without intervening with each other. Hell’s Kitchen is nominated for: Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role, Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role (with two actresses up for the nomination), Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Sound Design, Best Best Direction, Best Choreography, and Best Orchestrations.

Shoshana Bean stars as Jersey in Hell’s Kitchen beside her fellow nominee Kecia Lewis as Miss Liza Jane. The show also had a later opening on 20 April and took fans by storm with new original songs be Alicia Keys. Both actresses have been on Broadway for over two decades and deserve this Tony Award nomination.

Totaling in 132 nominations across 26 categories, the Tony Awards are sure to be massive this year. Winners for the Tony Awards are set to be announced on 16 June at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater.
