Lin-Manuel Miranda’s latest project as director for the musical film tick tick… BOOM! has released an exciting trailer in anticipation of the film’s release which is due for this autumn. The film is the newest contribution in an impressive collection of recent works from the Hamilton creator.

“Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda makes his feature directorial debut with tick, tick…BOOM!, an adaptation of the autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson, who revolutionized theater as the creator of Rent. The film follows Jon (Academy Award nominee and Tony Award winner Andrew Garfield), a young theater composer who’s waiting tables at a New York City diner in 1990 while writing what he hopes will be the next great American musical.

Days before he’s due to showcase his work in a make-or-break performance, Jon is feeling the pressure from everywhere: from his girlfriend Susan, who dreams of an artistic life beyond New York City; from his friend Michael, who has moved on from his dream to a life of financial security; amidst an artistic community being ravaged by the AIDS epidemic.

With the clock ticking, Jon is at a crossroads and faces the question everyone must reckon with: What are we meant to do with the time we have?

Ahead of the musical’s release and following the excitement of In The Heights debut in cinemas, IMDB has highlighted some exclusive trivia about the movie’s creation and some behind the scenes knowledge.

• tick tick… BOOM! is Lin-Manuel Miranda’s directorial debut.
• Netflix fought for the rights to the film following an intense bidding war.
• On the day production was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lin-Manuel Miranda and the cast and crew were shooting a scene in front of the home of Jonathan Larson, the composer of the musical.
• Jonathan Larson originally conceived tick, tick…BOOM! as a one man show. Later, it was adapted as a play with a cast of three. This film expands the cast even further.
• If you notice in the one frame of the teaser trailer, there is something that says 525,600 (presumably a reference to Rent, which mentions that number in the song Seasons of Love), and Rent was also written by Jonathan Larson.
• Vanessa Hudgens has appeared in two separate productions of Rent, which was created by Jonathon Larson. The first being the Hollywood Bowl in 2010 where she portrayed the role of Mimi, and the second being the Live Television Production in 2019 where she portrayed the role of Maureen.
• Bradley Whitford previously appeared in The West Wing (1999) in the starring role of Josh Lyman and returned to play the role in A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote (2020), which also features the director of this film Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda is a huge West Wing fan, and was played off at the end of his final performance in Hamilton (2020) by the theme music from the show.
• The lyrics of the song “Why” mention the song “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” from the movie Mary Poppins. The director of this movie, Lin-Manuel Miranda, appeared in the sequel, Mary Poppins Returns.
• Both Andrew Garfield and Jonathan Larson, who Garfield plays in the movie, are recipients of Tony Awards (although Larson won posthumously).
