Calling all Arts managers, designers, theatre practitioners, and professionals within the creative and cultural industries- The Prague Quadrennial is back again with the most innovative displays of performance, scenography, immersive experiences, theatre architecture and so much more. Festival passes are still available, so get your hands on one (or TWO) while you still can!

Prague Quadrennial
Me at the Festival 2019

I had the opportunity to function as an operations volunteer at the previous Prague Quadrennial 2019 and the experience was paradigm-shifting. Let’s just say this is not your typical festival experience. With over three hundred artworks on display, two large main exhibitions that are competitive in nature, performances that take place in various locations around Prague, workshops, seminars and even offerings for children, the PQ is jam-packed with stimulating content and immersions. Here’s a list and breakdown of some of the overarching programme sections so you can know before you go.

Exhibitions of Countries and Regions

Experience the diverse cultures of the world from a scenographic and performance design standpoint. With many awards at stake, witness how each country’s artistic team and representing curator creates unique artistic exhibitions to evoke something deep within you.

Student Exhibitions

These seek to give a platform to the emerging voices in performance design and scenography, and encourage artistic resource and culture sharing through the creation of exhibitions or installations that tell stories of the cultural knowledge and identity of the place. This is also a competitive offering.

Fragments II

Not quite bite-sized, the Fragments II exhibition seeks to appreciate the smaller things in theatre. Here you will find interesting scale models and mock-ups from the imaginations of 23 artists from 16 countries that can stand alone as works of art. Get inspired by this playful exploration of what’s possible.

PQ Performance

Witness the poetic and thought provoking ways that space is used in performance. From roughly 300 applicants, 20 performances were selected to be showcased throughout the Prague Quadrennial. Expect to be outdoors, have to look up or down and be moved by artists’ commitment to presence and intensity.

36Q°+H40

“36Q°+H40 is a multimedia exhibition and workshop programme focused on stage technologies and advanced digital environments like mixed, augmented and virtual realities, motion capture, or laser technologies, all in confluence with the art of performance”, as summed up perfectly from the official PQ website.

At the last Prague Quadrennial in 2019, I had the privilege of working closely with the operations team of The Blue Hour 36Q°- the 2nd iteration of this mind bending, fully immersive experience that blurred the lines between actor and audience, as one transformed seamlessly into the other, and included an emotional Virtual Reality experience at the centre of the offering. What will this 3rd instalment have to offer? We may need to be there to truly find out!

Some of the other categories in the program include:

  • PQ Studio- Provides an educational experience for emerging artists, designers and educators
  • PQ Talks- Curated conversations and seminars given by professionals in performance design and scenography.
  • PQ Kids- Interesting tactile environments for children and families to engage with.

How to get tickets

Tickets can be purchased through the Prague Quadrennial website or at the official PQ site in Prague, Czech Republic. There is a wide variety of ticket types, as you can purchase a ticket for 1 day, 3 days or a festival pass for all 11 days. Ticket prices are segmented by general, student and group.

Based on my personal experience with the PQ, here are my recommendations:

  • Unless there are a few specific talks or exhibitions that you want to see, anything less than a 3 days pass just won’t be enough. This is a dynamic and immersive festival so having time to take breaks from all the stimulation would also be a good idea.
  • If you are an emerging designer or theatre practitioner of any kind, the PQ Talks would be great to prioritise. Gain a wealth of knowledge and learn about who’s doing what with cutting-edge theatre technology.
  • Attend the country meet-ups! The PQ sure knows how to party, with events and meet-ups happening throughout the festival. Network, build connections and have fun with like-minded festival goers.

The Prague Quadrennial happens just once every four years. I definitely encourage all established and emerging artists, designers, and creatives to seek participation however they can; be it volunteering with general operations like I did or purchasing a ticket type that’s sufficient.
