The 96th Academy Awards

The 96th Academy Awards

Concluding this awards season, the 96th Academy Awards had multiple show stopping moments and unsurprisingly had several Kens. While Jimmy Kimmel played host to the Oscars again for the fourth time, other fan favourites made appearances and brought up old jokes that were thought forgotten to time. There was even a minor Batman reunion.

The film industry’s actors and actresses strive most of their careers to win an award like an Oscar. Hosted in Hollywood, California, The Academy Awards celebrate films that have premiered over the last twelve months. Taking place on 10 March, the gala presented 23 categories in which nominated films could potentially win. The Academy Awards is conferred upon by the Academy Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) and announce film nominations about a month before the actual awards ceremony takes place. This year, the film Oppenheimer soared with 13 nominations closely followed by the film Poor Things which had 11 nominations.

The blockbuster movie Oppenheimer took home seven wins out of its 13 nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor (going to Cillian Murphy who played the title role), Best Supporting Actor (going to Robert Downey Jr.), Best Director (going to Christopher Nolan), Best Original Score (going to Ludwig Göransson), Best Cinematography, and Best Film Editing. Film fans are divided over Oppenheimer taking home so many wins. Some fans are saying the other summer blockbuster movie Barbie was widely overlooked and underappreciated.

The pretty in pink Barbie film had eight nominations, and only won a single Oscar that evening. Singer songwriter Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell shared a win with their original song ‘What Was I Made For?’ and became the two youngest people to win two Academy Awards. With this win, Billie Eilish also achieved her “Triple Crown”, which is a recognised title given to someone who wins a Grammy, Golden Globe and Oscar for a movie song. The sibling duo performed the song live at the Academy Awards and received a heartfelt standing ovation.

“I’m so grateful for this song, and this movie and the way it made me feel. This goes out to everyone who was affected by this movie and how incredible it is,” Eilish said from the stage.

This wasn’t Barbie’s only live performance of the evening. Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken in the blockbuster film, performed his hit from the movie ‘I’m Just Ken’… with 65 other Kens in a sparklingly pink suit. The famous guitarist Slash made an appearance for this number and continued to bring the ‘Kenergy’.

Returning to the Academy Awards stage were two unlikely faces, but ones DC comic fans will recognise. Danny Devito and Arnold Schwarzenegger joined together on stage to present the award for Best Visual Effects. While it was a minor reunion, laughter could be heard from comic fans in the audience as they referenced their fatal attempts to win against Batman. One particular Batman happened to be in the audience and he jokingly made gestures for them to ‘bring it on’.
