In this interview with House of K’dor, the international Australian jewellery company, Zena K’dor explains how she made this family business a reality, what the creation process looks like from design to final product, and her latest crafted necklace which was created specifically for Jessica Pratt and is valued at $1.8 million.
How do you select which designs are made for creation?
Creating jewellery is an art which combines creative design, craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail. As designers we draw inspiration from working with mother nature’s finest natural gemstones and diamonds to bring our vision to life.
Essentially every design starts off with the beauty of the diamond or gemstone and highlighting their individual radiance and unique qualities. K’dor designs and handcrafts our own jewellery collections in Sydney, in addition to also creating bespoke jewellery designs as requested by our K’dor clients.
How did you select the gems and diamonds on Jessica Pratt’s piece, each stone representing a character Jessica plays?
We particularly wanted to feature Australian gemstones (in addition to spectacular natural diamonds) as a tribute to the connection of K’dor being an Australian owned and operated business and Jessica also being Australian.
To represent the four characters we chose;
A spectacular 7.11ct round brilliant cut natural diamond to represent the character of Olympia, a 1.90ct Red Garnet for Antonia, a 8.22ct teal coloured Sapphire for Giulietta and a rare 26ct ‘Red on Black Opal’ with an unique harlequin pattern reflecting four brilliant and iridescent colours for Stella. The necklace also features an endless flow of 120 additional brilliant cut natural diamonds all set in 18ct white gold.

What is it like running an international jewellery business?
House of K’dor is our passion and demands a delicate balance between creativity and innovation with the aim of creating unforgettable experiences for our guests who become part of the K’dor family.
We create and handcraft all of our own jewellery in our Sydney atelier. This allows us to provide a range of unique services which enable us to deliver bespoke and tailored options for our guests around Australia and internationally.
Where does your passion for jewellery come from?
My passion for jewellery lies in its ability to evoke emotions and create everlasting memories. As a child I loved playing dress ups with my grandmother’s jewellery. I believe jewellery holds an inherent sentimental value that connects us to our past, present, and future. I am also inspired by my husband Tarick K’dor who is the master jeweller and has been perfecting his craft for over 30 years. Our jewellery is renowned for its artistry and craftsmanship. We do not mass produce our designs, everything we create is handcrafted.
What was the creative process for making Jessica Pratt’s $1.8 million necklace?
It has been an incredible honour to have collaborated with Opera Australia on creating this beautiful masterpiece for superstar Soprano Jessica Pratt to wear. I personally love the drama, romance, and theatre of the Opera.
The necklace was inspired by the four characters in The Tales of Hoffmann and each gemstone was carefully selected to represent the energy and personality of the four characters being Olympia, Antonia, Gulietta and Stella. Many hours were needed to perfect this creation. From selecting the gemstones, to sketching the design and actually making the necklace in our Sydney atelier.

Why did you select Jessica Pratt for such a special item to be made?
It was an exciting opportunity to connect with Jessica upon her return back home to perform with Opera Australia at the iconic Sydney Opera House. We felt this was a wonderful way to connect the worlds of Opera and the artistry of jewellery.
Jessica Trying On The Necklace
You’ve also designed for other celebrities, is there anyone that comes to mind that you still get excited thinking about their pieces?
We have had the pleasure of collaborating with many beautiful celebrities, every experience is exciting. Recently we were thrilled to create some beautiful pieces for Rita Ora whilst she was in Australia as a judge on the T.V. show The Voice.
Another highlight was seeing Kelly Rowland on stage at Coachella alongside Beyonce and Michelle wearing our signature K’dor necklace. That said, we treasure the opportunity to connect and welcome every single guest that enters our world.
How did the company go from being an idea to creation?
K’dor is a family owned and operated Australian business, originally founded by master jeweller Tarick K’dor, who started his craft as a talented, young, and highly skilled goldsmith 1999 and we have together built the business that it is today. Next year we are excited to be celebrating 25 years of K’dor.
Do you yourself have a favourite type of stone or gem?
The green emerald stands out for me as the most captivating gemstone with its beautiful vibrant hues of green which makes me feel connected to nature. It also happens to be the birthstone of my first child Noah and is another reason why the emerald will always have a special place in my heart. But every gemstone is incredibly beautiful and mesmerising in their own unique way.
Are there any clients you hope to work with in the future?
Princess Catherine, the future Queen. Whilst it’s hard to compete with the spectacular royal jewels, it’s fun to dream!
