The side project of Radiohead, The Smile, have debuted new songs that will feature in the final episode of British period gangster series Peaky Blinders. The television show which concludes on 3rd April in the UK is well-known for its use of juxtaposition between modern-day punk, rock and abstract music. The Smile consists of Radiohead members Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood with Tom Skinner.
Soundtrack work
The musicians have contributed to the soundtrack of the show, with Thom Yorke previously creating a surreal and ethereal piano-led track titled 5.17 for episode three of the current series.
Speaking to the NME in February voicing his excitement about the music, the show’s director Anthony Byrne explained:
“Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood contributed some original stuff. I’m over the moon about all of that. The music has always been really important historically, and I was keen to bring a dramatic score into it. We’re using that much more in this season. It’s a much heavier season so the score is taking things in a very different direction.”
The Smile – Pana-vision
The track Pana-vision was released on the day of the Peaky Blinders finale, and will be used in the television soundtrack. The music video was animated by artist Sabrina Nichols with imagery by Stanley Donwood.
The second new track to debut in the finale is the Thom Yorke instrumental That’s How Horses Are, which feels fitting and positively familiar both as a Yorke composition and as a soundtrack piece.
