California rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers have announced a reunion 2022 global tour with original guitarist John Frusciante featuring in the line up once more. The fun loving quartet shared the news online in an amusing comedy video in the style of a retro news broadcast, sprinkled with influences from Saturday Night Live and the Anchorman films.
The announcement
In the announcement video all of the band except Frusciante feature as characters; Anthony Kiedis as ‘Johnson Hammerswaddle’, Flea as ‘Todd the Squirrel’, and Chad Smith as ‘Randy Raindrops’. Interviewing Frusciante, he reveals that the tour will start in June 2022, with the US dates starting in July.
In an ever so slightly more serious medium, Live Nation who are collaborators on the tour released a press release also sharing the tour news, saying:
“The boys are firing on all cylinders, their hearts are full and they’re fixing to unleash an infinite river of creativity, and rock your world. The band is grateful to be working with event producers Live Nation in this endeavor.
All the tour dates, sales information, support acts and other factoids will be available shortly.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers have been around, and have not just fallen off the turnip truck, but to a man, they have never been more thrilled, bursting with commitment and purpose, as they are regarding this upcoming tour. They have no interest in resting on past accolades, awards or commercial success, this is a mission, they intend to channel the most mighty spirits, and give everything they’ve got.”
RHCP 2022 Global Tour – what do we know?
The plans for a reunion tour had initially been scheduled for 2020, however the pandemic put the gig dates on hold until now. While the dates and details are yet to be announced and confirmed just yet, it is thought that this will most likely be a stadium tour, and fans should sign up to the band’s mailing list to be notified as soon as these are released and to get a jump on early access to tickets as they become available.
The RHCP lineup has evolved through the decades, and it was announced in December 2019 that John Frusciante had re-joined the group – he famously left and returned several times over the years, most notably with the ten year break from 2009 that recently ended. Frusciante last toured with the band in 2007, and was replaced by guitarist Josh Klinghoffer.
New material
As if the news of the upcoming tour wasn’t enough to excite the hearts of fans, there is also the prospect of new material to look forward to. Drummer Chad Smith coyly shared the news last year that RHCP have a new album coming with producer and music legend Rick Rubin. Although Smith told fans he was under strict instructions not to talk about it in any more detail than that, saying the band were ‘psyched’ to have their old guitarist back and were excited to be making new music.
For fans of the band and of Rick Rubin’s unique production style, the knowledge that Rubin will be producing the record is all we need to pique our interest and build the excitement leading into next year. We hope to share more from inside the recording studio as it happens, and anticipate the new release will come before the global tour kicks off in 2022.
