MXOM: A New London Based Rap And Grime Artist Making Waves

MXOM A New London Based Rap And Grime Artist Making Waves TheatreArtLife

MXOM is an up-and-coming Rap/Grime artist who exudes layers of topical and edgy material whilst sticking true to his South London roots, with the amazing twist of originally being a classically trained musician. He is set to release his latest single Wezzy on 4th August, which is due to make waves of excitement online following his most recent singles BXNG and FXMOUS. Praised for his relatable and current lyrics as well as his edgy production style, MXOM is set to make moves and a statement with the new single. We take a look at his story so far, in anticipation of his new musical release.

The story of MXOM

MXOM has an interesting and varied musical, personal and professional background. Having grown up in the streets of Croydon MXOM (real name Ugo Nelson) had to overcome adversity that came with the territory. He faced run-ins with the law and decided that he had too much potential to head down a path he may regret. Choosing to venture to the sunny sidewalks of Silicon Valley was quite the change for him.

He started a tech company utilising his long-term interest and skill in coding, and although he excelled in the area, he felt unfulfilled. He came back to his hometown to pursue entertainment, a testament to his core creative mindset. Never one to do things by half measures, he trained in a prestigious drama school that he cites as a key asset that makes him standout from the pack.

Wezzy

One back in Croydon, he was influenced by the London hip hop genre and local influences, creating a merging of the trap style with a UK based grittiness and a fresh perspective for the scene. MXOM explains that he takes a lot of inspiration from the early work of Kanye West, whom he has always admired, with the new track featuring a distinct production style utilising autotune, which is a trademark of the distinctive and recognisable sound West is often known for.

MXOM has always valued his own work ethic, and is a feature that has led him to achieve so much in his early career across his multitude of ventures. He continues to do so with his new series of one-minute freestyles (#1MF) which are a regular contribution by the artist whereby he releases a freestyle video every week to display his skill and match those he looks up to.

Wezzy – The new single from MXOM

Musically, Wezzy incorporates a hypnotic and dreamlike instrumental quality to the track, contrasting in juxtaposition with the harsh quality of his lyrical content. With a minimal yet dark low end that keeps up the momentum in driving the track forward, the liberal and creative use of reverb on the vocal line throughout holds the listener’s focus on MXOM’s strong vocals, and makes the production of Wezzy feels fresh, flowing, and full of emotion.

MXOM seems to already have carved out his own signature instrumental sound. Best described as ‘an upbeat infusion of sound intertwined with traditional trap elements’, MXOM creates something new entirely that places him right at the cutting edge of the UK Hip Hop scene.

Wezzy by MXOM is available from 4th August.
