We are asking stage managers around the world, in a stage manager tag, some key questions about their job. Here is Darren Kowacki, based out of Melbourne, Australia.
1. Are you a minimalist or a hoarder Stage Manager?
I feel like I definitely hoard things from show to show.
2. What do you always have with you on stage?
It really depends on what part of the process we are at. I always carry my pacer pencil around, trusty LED torch and my comms. But I’m never far from mark up tape, master moves, master plots and a first aid kit.
3. What’s in your kit?.
I tour around my own SM Drawers case so I’ve collected a lot of things over the years but I’m forever going through pacer leds, blu tack and tape tape tape. I have a lot of items that always seem to be there for others such as pencils, mints, sharpeners etc – the top 2 drawers of my case is often referred to as officeworks.
4. Mac or PC?
Funny, I started out as a PC SM until 2013 when I turned to Mac and have never looked back.
5. What’s in your pencil case?
.9 & .7 Mechanical Pencils, post it notes, a highlighter (not for me) erasers and sharpies.
6. Favourite colour highlighter
I’ve never been a big fan of using highlighters, I don’t like putting permanent markings on scripts etc. If I had to pick it would need to be a colour that stands out to people. I feel yellow is too bland, green or blue is hard to read the text so something like fluro pink.
7. Favourite pencil
Pentel Twist-Erase III Mechanical Pencil (0.9mm) Black Barrel and nothing else!
8. What may be surprising that you don’t use
I don’t like 2B, HB anything B. I use them if I have to. I also don’t like pens (again so permanent)
9. Coffee or Tea
Tea (don’t drink coffee at all)
10. Favourite Genre to work in
Musical Theatre

11. Advice for new Stage Managers
The learning never stops and no show is ever the same so be open to trying new things and doing things differently. If you have your own SM team use them and their skills.
