The Stage Manager Tag: Jenni Ferg

We are asking stage managers around the world, in a stage manager tag, some key questions about their job. Here is Jenni Ferg.

1. Are you a minimalist or a hoarder Stage Manager?

HOARDER!!

2. What do you always have with you on stage?

My waist pocket apron (filled with bobby pins, safety pins, hair ties, bandaids, compact mirror, mints, flashlight, etc).

3. What’s in your kit?

EVERYTHING!! Mainly office supplies like pens, pencils, highlighters, tape, hole punch, speaker, multi plug phone charger, but some odds and ends like plastic forks, stress ball, candy dish for the techs, and so on)

4. Mac or PC?

Mac!!

5. What’s in your pencil case?

Pens, pencils, white eraser, highlighter, highlighter tabs, sticky notes, glue stick, etc.

6. Favourite colour highlighter

Yellow. Beautifully fluorescent under the dim lights.

7. Favourite pencil

Any mechanical pencil with a side button.

8. What may be surprising that you don’t use?

My stopwatch. I find it too clunky. My phone’s apps are way easier. Or the food in my fridge. Teching a show can be hella crazy and I usually just order to go.

9. Coffee or Tea?

Both. But usually coffee or chocolate covered espresso beans.

10. Favourite Genre to work in

Ballet!!

BONUS QUESTION
11. Advice for new Stage Managers

It’s totally OK to be an assistant stage manager. There’s nothing wrong with being the best assistant there is. I find there’s so much pressure to be the best stage manager, but behind every great stage manager is a group of amazing assistant stage managers.
