Venus-Tyané: Teaching Artist and Performer – Theatre People

Venus-Tyané

Hello TheatrePeople! This week, I’m so pleased to introduce you to Venus-Tyané, a theatre teaching artist and performer hailing from Tucson, Arizona. I met Venus through the Teaching Artist Alliance and loved her interview—where she talks about the stage being magical and a ‘land of connections.’ A place where things are more felt than logically understood.

Hoping you enjoy Venus-Tyané’s theatrical musings as much as I did.

What’s a show that inspires you? (explain away!)

One of the shows that inspires me the most is In the Heights. The show is written by people from neighborhoods like it, and about the people in it. We get to hear their music, laugh at their conversations, and most importantly emotionally connect with their stories.

What’s one of your happiest moments in theatre?

I performed at the renowned Friedrichstadtpalast in Berlin, Germany for their special New Years Eve show. I was a senior in high school and was performing on stage in front of a crowd of 5,000 people. It was amazing and exhilarating.

What’s the biggest ‘fail’ or goof you’ve seen on stage? (do tell the story)

I’ll tell you one of my biggest goofs that I’ve had onstage. I was in a musical called Air Raid and was singing a duet on stage. In the middle of the song I completely blanked on the words. My partner blanked on the words too, and we just stared lovingly at each other and hummed until the last line, when we both miraculously remembered the words. When the song was over I went backstage and burst into tears. I came to find out that we had played it off so well that the audience (apparently) had no idea that something went wrong. That was sadly also the night that the show got recorded. (wah wah wah)

Why do you love theatre?

Theatre is a magical land where wishes and dreams, nightmares and dark rememberings can take place. It is the land of connections.

Theatre is for…

SOUL-CONNECTIONS

A person is able to experience truths deeper when participating in theatre than in many ‘logical’ conversations. When someone experiences another’s story, then they are more able to understand them and people like them.
