Tiziana Pagliarulo Part 2: Our Legacy Creations

Tiziana Pagliarulo Part 2: Looking Towards Her Future

Tiziana (@tizipagliarulo on Instagram) is one of five founding members of Our Legacy Creations. In Part 1, she discusses how she went from being a dancer herself to being hand picked by a legendary director before his passing, and taking her career further than she could have ever dreamed in the Live Entertainment Industry, Television, and Cinema. Below is part 2 of our interview as we discuss the founding of Our Legacy Creations.

Why did you want to co-found Our Legacy Creations and what was your mindset going into it?

Our Legacy Creations was born out of some unexpected circumstances. So at this point in my life, I found myself having to make a decision that was a personal evolution! There was a situation within the Dragone company that changed our team dynamic and myself, and others decided to leave and co-found OLC. None of us were initially ready to accept this big change, but later, an ardent desire to reunite and continue to transmit everything that Mr. Franco Dragone had taught us, gave us the courage to face the situation and continue, in our way, to keep him alive. We strongly respect the amazing work that Franco had undertaken throughout his life until his last day. Me and my partners are connected by a strong synergy that pushes us to create beautiful pieces of art. We strongly respect each other and share the same human values. So I think, those are a lot of good reasons, for me, to co-found Our Legacy Creations!

Where do you want Our Legacy Creations to go in the future both short and long term?

My biggest desire is to make OLC one of the most respected companies in the arts industry! Every time the name of this company is mentioned, I would love to see a smile appear on people’s lips. I want OLC to have the chance to create live shows that remain over time, that mark several generations and maybe change some people’s lives!

What do some of your responsibilities entail being the Artistic Director of Our Legacy Creations and a co-founder of the company?

My biggest responsibility and duty being the Artistic Director of OLC, is to ensure that the company always remains at its highest level, giving a strong aesthetic imprint and always keeping the gaze of a sharp and refined eye! Respecting all the cultures and putting together the world’s greatest talent, creating a community of “ lifeguards of soul!”

You are one of five founding members of Our Legacy Creations, how did you all meet and decide to build the foundations of a company together?

Three of my partners already worked with me in the Dragone company so we already had a strong working relationship, Francois Girard, our Managing Director,  Anna Robb, our Executive Producer and Damien Long, our Director of Creation.  Our fifth partner, Terrence Williams, Manager Director, was introduced to us by Anna.

Do you believe you struggled more or had to put up with more due to being a female in the industry? Why or why not?

I think that in general, women struggle more than men in life! But, based on my experiences, I have to admit, that it is probably just an impression and that in the end these men are very “good!” I think, in general, that if you respect people, whether they are man or woman, in return, you only receive back the same thing. If I‘m completely honest, sometimes, on the contrary, being a woman has helped me! The most beautiful victories, being a woman, I experienced in Saudi Arabia:

During Terhal creation, I made a scene dedicated to the strength and beauty of all women in the world. When we presented the scene to the Saudi Ministry of Culture, during rehearsals, they didn’t completely approve it. We fought so hard to get them to accept it exactly the way it was created. After much discussion, they allowed us to leave it in the show. On the day of the premiere, a group of women in the audience all hugged each other and started crying together. The dancers, on stage while dancing, started to cry too. You can imagine that afterwards, I also cried! Until today, this scene remains one of the most favourite scenes of the entire show!

I had another similar experience, not long ago, when I staged and choreographed an event for the UNESCO  last September 10th. I’m used to working with traditional dance groups there by now. The person in charge of these groups, that I respect very much, came to me during rehearsals to tell me that he loved, after seeing Terhal, how beautiful it was to see how female and male foreign dancers could share the stage space together. From this moment on, he approached the Ministry of Culture to convince them to allow men and women to dance together even during the traditional dances. He managed to successfully complete his mission and for the first time, during this event, we were able to put them together! These are two small, but big victories that I am extremely proud of!

Are there any questions you don’t particularly like answering yet are common for you during interviews?

Honestly, I don’t do many interviews, but in general I don’t like when I have to introduce myself, explain what I do or have done…I prefer to let my work speak for me.

Who has been part of your support team during your endeavours in the industry?

Lots of people! I take this opportunity to thank each of them! But for sure, there were some key people who allowed me to be here today. I try to go in order of knowledge and not of importance.

1) First of all, I thank my son Danilo, without his support, understanding and courage, I would never have made it.

2) Then I met Giuliano Peparini, Artistic Director, and even if we decided to take two different paths, I have to admit that, thanks to our collaboration, I learned a lot and got the chance to meet so many talented people.

3) Filippo Ferraresi, Artistic Director, who gave me a strong support in life, deeply believed in me and brought me into Franco Dragone arms.

4) Mr. Franco Dragone who gave me the wings of freedom.

5) Francois Girard who allowed me to be the Artistic Director of Our Legacy Creation and fights every day, together with my partners, to make all my dreams come true.

I want to give myself a compliment, it rarely happens: I also thank myself for being able to challenge fate and being able to seize this long series of incredible and unpredictable appointments!

Tiziana Pagliarulo Part 2: Our Legacy Creations

Was there ever a time you’d thought you wouldn’t “make it” in this industry? What does “making it” in the industry look like to you? Has that changed over the years?

Being a person who has a lot of faith in the future and life in general, I always think that there is the possibility that I can’t “make it!”. In the artistic world, if you think you’ve arrived, you’re dead! The research, the evolution is constant, you never really get to the end. “Making it” in the industry for me, means getting to the point of being able to choose and select projects that you like most, having the freedom to be able to tell, to the rest of the world, what you carry inside.

When people trust you and consider you a safe value, when you don’t sleep at night because you can’t wait to get back to work. Of course that has changed over the years! Because I have changed, my responsibilities have changed. When you have such a strong passion, you have to learn to deal with it every day. We learn to move forward together step by step, sometimes we argue, sometimes we make love, it’s a real love story, but what matters is that it keeps you alive and never dies.

If you could go back in time and tell yourself one-thing, what would it be?

To do exactly the same things I have been doing until today!
