The Ocean Decade Exhibition Just Started in Lisbon, Portugal

The Ocean Decade Exhibition

The Ocean Decade Exhibition has arrived in Lisbon, Portugal. In this exhibition you will be able to see surreal photo artworks that illustrate the 7 things everyone should know about the ocean. The exhibition will be running from June 25th to July 9th, 2022. Didn’t want to travel anywhere in the next few weeks? Well, maybe you should after all, and get that flight to Lisbon now.

The Ocean Decade Exhibition is the result of the global creative community mobilizing to: help transform the image of the ocean science and conservation, raise awareness of the importance of the ocean, and inspire support for action, during this pivotal decade.

Many of the artists of this exhibit generously made their work available for free so that the organizers were able to create this beautiful exhibition.

If you can’t make it to Lisbon in person, you can view the artworks here as well online.

The Ocean Decade Exhibition is an official activity of the 2021-2030 United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

The following organizations are sponsoring this important creative effort to raise awareness around the world: UNESCO, UN Environment Program, The Ocean Agency, Oceano Azul Foundation, Adobe, HP, D&dA, and the Florida Aquarium.

Additionally, the Lisbon start of what will be a wandering exhibition coincides with the UN Ocean Conference which will take place in Lisbon as well, from June 27th to July 1st.

On the UN states on their website, “The Ocean Conference, co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Portugal, comes at a critical time as the world is seeking to address many of the deep-rooted problems of our societies laid bare by the COVID-19 pandemic and which will require major structural transformations and common shared solutions that are anchored in the SDGs. To mobilize action, the Conference will seek to propel much needed science-based innovative solutions aimed at starting a new chapter of global ocean action.”

Many of the artists of the Ocean Decade Exhibition not only made their artwork available for free to be exhibited live but also to be downloaded online, so you can create your own exhibitions, in schools, libraries, businesses, social media (or just about anywhere else for that matter).

You will find the artworks for download here, on the Ocean Agency website.

Whether you showcase just one artwork, or all of them, it’s completely up to you. All the organizers ask is that you be so kind and credit the artist and share what you do using #OceanDecade to inspire others to do likewise.

All the pictures in this article are as well a part of this extraordinary creative venture to help save the oceans.

The surreal artworks were all inspired by the UN’s 7 Principles of Ocean Literacy and were created by artists from around the world.

Basically, according to the Ocean Literacy Principles (OLP), every ocean literate person should understand the following principles:

1.    Earth has one big ocean with many features.
2.    The ocean and life in the ocean shape the features of Earth.
3.    The ocean is a major influence on weather and climate.
4.    The ocean makes Earth habitable.
5.    The ocean supports a great diversity of life and ecosystems.
6.    The ocean and humans are inextricably interconnected.
7.    The ocean is largely unexplored.

You can find out more about ocean literacy on the Ocean Literacy Website.

After Lisbon, the Exhibition will continue to appear in many other major cities, aquariums, conferences, and hundreds of other locations during the Ocean Decade from now until 2030.
