The Freezer – Hostel and Cultural Centre in Remote Iceland

The Freezer is a hostel and cultural center in remote West Iceland. You can find this unique cultural site in the town of Rif. The Freezer is a multi-award winning recycled and renovated fish factory that now offers art and culture as well as accommodation in stylish apartments and a one-of-a-kind social hostel.

Just three hours from Reykjavik, in the tiny Icelandic town of Rif (which is otherwise empty), sits this splendid and unique artistic hub.

It is named The Freezer, because, quite simply and literally, it is housed in an old fish factory freezer.

This cultural gem is the brainchild of Kari Vioarsson. And, as The Freezer states on their website, their goal is to create unforgettable memories, unique atmospheres, and outstanding art.

The decription of this place on TripAdvisor was what got me inquiring further:

“Have you ever slept in a theatre or shared breakfast with the local and visiting artists, discussing stage lightning and brush strokes? In The Freezer it just might happen, because the social hostel is a part of a vibrant cultural centre, artist residency and theatre, situated amidst the stunning natural sights (alien infested glacier!) of the Snaefellsnes peninsula. Visit us and take part in creating the unique experience of The Freezer together with international travellers, artists, clowns, cooks, auto mechanics, meteorologists, pancake-makers and sociologists.”

The Freezer was launched in 2010 and since then, during the summer months, there is an event taking place every single evening. No small feat in a corner of Iceland where there is practically nothing else.

As a professional theatre, The Freezer produces new shows, performed in english and created by local artists.

“All of the shows in this fish factory style theatre have received rave reviews and The Freezer has an excellent reputation for creating highly ambitious and entertaining shows of high quality and standard.”

The official website explains further, “The Freezer´s shows are usually inspired by stories and sagas from West Iceland. As its main goal is to rejuvenate these sometimes-forgotten tales and make them come alive for new audiences in an exciting and unforgettable way.”

Then there is the artist residency program, which offers theatre makers, performance artists, dancers, and musicians the opportunity to develop and work on their art in a secluded and peaceful environment.

Right opposite the magnificent Snæfellsjökull glacier which has been a source of inspiration for artists all over the world for centuries.

Founder Vioarsson’s dream is to someday host a street festival that will feature theatre, music, and art.

He is also the mastermind/artist-curator behind the murals that adorn The Freezer’s façade, as well as the façade of the old fish factory in the tiny town of Hellissandur just a few miles down the highway from Rif.

“Growing up here, I would have liked to be exposed to so much more creativity,” Vioarsson says, “This will hopefully inspire local kids to become artists themselves.”

On top of letting your artistic heart beat faster, The Freezer is also perfectly located for exploring the Snaefellsnes peninsula & Snaefellsjokull National Park.
