Show Reel Of The Week: Saulo Sarmiento

About Saulo.

My first steps into  show business were in Las Palmas. While there is not much to do there, I was lucky to find my first gymnastics coach. I was on the Canary Island gymnastics team and I participated in international competitions and festivals. I learned a good base of gymnastics, but it was not what I was looking for.

In 2005 I decided to move to Madrid, alone, with the purpose of learning more, studying at the university and to become a professional artist. It was not easy. I worked in some night clubs, as a performer and an acrobat. One day a friend of mine introduced me to a Choreographer and Director named Luka Yexi, who became my first real Dance mentor and master, and a good friend. He opened the doors of his company to me, where I worked for 4 years. I did musical shows, events and TV shows around the world.

With a foundation in dance and gymnastics, the circus business seemed the most logical next step. After an audition for a popular French company in Paris in 2010, I decided to move there and started to work for Les Farfadais. I travelled around the globe with them, but most importantly, I learnt a lot about circus. I became an acrobat and a specialist in aerial performance.

It was also in that year that I met one of the most important influences of my artistic life. Giuliano Peparini, who gave me the opportunity to work with him in Sidaction (2011) and opened to me the doors of Franco Dragone, The House of Dancing Water (Macao, China, 2012) and the famous TV show: Amici (Canale5, Italy).

I realized in this time that my real goal wasn’t to be an acrobat, but a solo artist, which means an artist with an unique act who can travel the world selling his act. And that was my next step. I created a new technique, a new apparatus (the diagonal and flying pole) and worked really hard on it to get it ready. Meanwhile, I discovered that the Pole Dance was a discipline growing up fast, and I became the French Champion (2011) and the World Pole Art Champion in 2012. Those 2 titles changed my life. The entire Pole community started to follow my progress and I became a popular “pole start”.

2013 and 2014 were the most important years of my artistic life. With my Flying Pole act ready (created and performed by myself) I was selected for the most important contemporary circus festival in the world: Cirque de Demain, with a bronze medal and the prize of the year with Cirque du Soleil. I took days to realize this fact. Those prizes were the first of many, and opened to me the doors of  show business at the highest level, as a solo artist.

My Ideal Role:

I personally like dark, mysterious roles, it fits my act better. In my latest video, I play the black swan.
