Michael Sheen has turned himself into a “Not for profit” actor. How did he manage to do that and what do not for profit actors mean? The Welsh actor trained at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and mainly worked in live theatre roles in the 1990s until his big break into the film industry in 2002. Since then, he has gone on to work in several major productions but has recently made himself into a ‘social enterprise’ and became a ‘not for profit’ actor.
Michael Sheen is from Newport, Wales and has been acting professionally since 1991. He was first involved in theatrical stage productions and made his big break into acting in his final year at University when he debuted in When She Danced at the Globe Theatre. He later broke into the film side of acting with some of his most notable roles being in films like: Underworld trilogy, Tron: Legacy, Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through The Looking Glass, and Good Omens.
He’s even proven to continue having good ethics despite how Hollywood turns people around. Michael Sheen is currently an ambassador to several charities including Keep Wales Tidy, TREAT Trust Wales, and Into Film. He uses his role to make a good standing name for himself internationally. He mostly describes himself as a ‘not for profit actor’ due to his contributions to social causes. For example, a few years ago he sold his multiple houses in an effort to ensure that the 2019 Homeless World Cup could go ahead in Cardiff, Wales (only about 10 minutes from where we grew up in Newport).
He has since pledged to fund more projects that are close to his home and heart using the money he earns from his acting career. He is also popular among Hollywood activists by constantly criticising against high-cost credit agreements. He even returned his OBE to speak out against the Prince of Wales title.
“I want to be one of those people that helps other people the way that so many others have helped me. I have essentially made myself into a social enterprise, a not for profit actor.”
Michael Sheen first stated that he made himself into a ‘not for profit’ actor in 2021. He has pledged £50,000 to a scholarship that helps Welsh students go to Oxford University. Reportedly, he donated his entire salary from the movie Last Train to Christmas to Charity.
However, Michael Sheen is not the first actor to donate so much of his earnings to Charity. He is so far the only one to make it so public that he will continue to be a not for profit actor. Other actors and actresses who have donated the majority of their earnings include Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, Jeff Bridges, and George Cloony.
