Lake Victoria Basin Talent Development and Adolescent Health (LVDAH) is a national nonprofit organization committed to creating safe spaces for adolescents. It is an organization which nurtures young people’s talents by providing opportunities and infrastructure for them to express themselves, perform, and grow.
Social circus and social theatre are something which, over the years, has been established in all corners of the world.
Many theatre professionals realized since the very beginning days of the performing arts that the stage can be a great conduit for social change and support.
It is no coincidence that many schools around the world also offer theatre classes to their students. For it is a known fact that being on stage enhances the self-confidence of students and it can be a major source of growth, as well as a safe space, for people of all ages to express themselves.
The Lake Victoria Talent Development and Adolescent Health non-profit organization (LVDAH) operates within the lake Victoria region of Kenya.
They are committed to creating a safe space where adolescents’ and people’s talents in general are nurtured.
To achieve this, the non-profit organization regularly offers opportunities for young people to perform and express themselves.
LVDAH uses talent and stage plays in their outdoor moving theatre as well as acting opportunities in local movies as an advocacy tool to bridge gaps and further growth and change within the community.
This July and August the organization offered a program themed “Uchaguzi bila Ubaguzi.” An opportunity to perform for peace, to support voters in the election on August 9th, 2022.
In September, they started “Zindua Talanta” to identify, nurture, mentor, empower and support local talents by giving them a platform to showcase their talents.
Currently, in another admirable effort to create safe spaces for adolescent creatives, the LVDAH is working in a partnership with the Kenya Film Commission to offer a capacity-building workshop on basic film-making skills.
The workshop will run from December 5th to 10th, 2022, and is targeting 100 filmmakers from Home Bay county.
Through the creative arts, the program will create effective advocacy tools for women and young self-reliant creative entrepreneurs.
The workshop participants will learn basic filmmaking skills in film production, directing and producing, screenwriting, acting, editing, and cinematography.
They will learn to develop creative solutions and to find their own voice to address social justice issues like gender inequalities, economic disparity, youth unemployment, and women’s empowerment.
On their website the Lake Victoria Basin Talent Development and Adolescent Health organization states, “LVDAH Kenya believes that all people from all walks of life, race, age, gender, differently abled must always be given equal opportunities and their human rights must be observed and fully protected.”
They further state, “The organization’s commitment is to empower vulnerable societal groups, with an aim of obtaining desired results at all levels of programming and creating change. Though change is a process and might take long. Thus, tenacity and being persistent has been key among board members and staff.”
