Global Citizen have assembled with the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to organise a social media rally as part of the “Stand Up for Ukraine” campaign. The campaign to assist displaced Ukrainians affected by the war is supported by U2 and Bono, who helped initiate the proceedings.
Stand Up for Ukraine
The campaign will take place between 8th – 9th April, and will commence with the digital rally, which will consist of testimonials from advocates on location in Ukraine, spreading the call for humanitarian aid, and there are plans to also feature celebrity speakers. The plan for 9th April consists of world government leaders meeting to attend a global summit.
Speaking in an online video, President Zelenskyy appealed for help, saying:
“I appeal to people throughout the world. To free, sincere, open, kind people. I ask you to support Ukraine, to support Ukrainians with the “Stand Up for Ukraine” motto. Join us. On 9th April, the biggest online event ‘Social Media Rally’ will support Ukrainian temporary migrants. To help them eventually get back home, to prevent them from becoming refugees. To help them get their homes back, just like before the war.
I’m grateful to U2 and Bono for this campaign initiative. I’m inviting everybody: musicians, actors, athletes, businessmen, politicians, everybody. Everyone who wants to join this movement and ‘Stand Up for Ukraine’. I’m thankful to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, for her approval to arrange the summit, a special summit to mobilise funds for our people, our families, our children. To restore their homes, to restore our Ukraine.
When you have a home, you have everything. You have safety, the ability to come back, come back home any time. You have freedom to be with someone you love, you want to be with, or the freedom to be alone when you want it. When you have your home, you know what you will leave to children and you know where they are waiting for you, waiting always. When you have a home your life is more simple because you don’t need to look for support on the side, because you have what is yours. And it is important. Millions of Ukrainians had their own home, had their own dreams, had their own quiet place, had their own world they could close from the others or open it to everyone.
They had their own home until Russian missiles, bombs, shells came in. Until the invaders have come, and destroyed and burned down absolutely everything. City after city, village after village, thousands of houses ruined, thousands of destroyed apartments. Hundreds of cities and towns are annihilated, some are erased to ashes, burned down completely. Millions of Ukrainians are deprived of homes. As for now, there are 3.5 million displaced Ukrainians abroad. The majority of them are women and children. And about 6 million more people are now displaced inside our country – to be further from Russia and closer to the freedom, and I deliberately don’t want to call these people refugees, only displaced people. And I believe for them it is temporary, for all of us, while the war is still on, while the Russian army is still not removed from our land, until the restoration of our country begins.
We are doing everything possible for our victory. We are doing everything possible to bring peace back. We are doing everything possible to help each of our citizens wait for this horrible period to end. Wherever they are. And then get back to their homes afterwards. To rebuild, to restore absolutely everything. I believe we are capable of doing such a thing. Together it’s definitely possible to achieve. But for now, while our courageous army fights with the enemy, who’s still in our motherland, I appeal to you. Join us, join for humanity to win.”
