Elton John Achieves EGOT Status

Elton John Achieves EGOT Status

Elton John achieves EGOT status after being the recipient of an Emmy Award for Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium. This achievement was greatly deserved as Elton John has had a lengthy career since his debut album back in 1969 (later released in the U.S. in early 1975). He was one of the first openly gay artists and gave a voice to the LGBTQ+ community. Although he claims he has retired from touring, the artist still does the occasional show and is rumoured to be working on a new album.

After receiving this prestigious honour, Elton John made a statement to Variety Magazine:

“I am incredibly humbled to be joining the unbelievably talented group of EGOT winners tonight. The journey to this moment has been filled with passion, dedication, and the unwavering support of my fans all around the world. Tonight is a testament to the power of the arts and the joy that it brings to all our lives. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my career, I am incredibly grateful.”

Elton John is the 19th person to achieve EGOT status. To achieve such a status, the person has to win at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony award. The first person to achieve such a status was Richard Rodgers back in 1962 and Viola Davis previously won the status in 2023 before Elton John became the newest member of EGOT status. Although EGOT status is his latest achievement, his first high status in his career was in 1992 when he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and only two years later was invited into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. From there, his awards continued throughout his career.

Elton John has sold over 300 million records worldwide and has over 50 songs on the ‘Top 40 hits’. He currently holds the record for biggest selling single of all time for his song Candle In The Wind, originally released in 1997 and has since sold over 33 million copies. His first tour was in 1970 and his latest tour ended in 2023. He is also credited as being the most successful solo male performer in American Billboard charts and the third most successful worldwide, coming behind only Madonna and The Beatles. Three of his albums have been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Elton John is also famous for several of his Soundtrack albums. His first one was in 1971 but Walt Disney Studios recruited him to work on their soundtrack for The Lion King. Since then, he worked on numerous soundtracks in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s including Aida, The Road to El Dorado, and Billy Elliot. He has also recently collaborated with multiple artists such as his latest duet with Ed Sheeran in 2021. Before that, he worked with Stevie Nicks, Stevie Wonder, Nicki Minaj, Miley Cyrus, and many more famous friends of his. Although Elton John has achieved EGOT status, it would not surprise anyone if he chose to continue his career and thus continuing his long list of achievements.
