American singer-songwriter Cyndi Lauper sells her publishing catalogue and the majority share of her master recording revenue to Pophouse Entertainment Group. This is the Swedish entertainment company’s first US deal, however Pophouse Entertainment Group have already made a name for themselves through ABBA’s Voyage and the upcoming KISS avatar show.
While the acquisition of the majority of Cyndi Lauper’s catalogue is now Pophouse’s, the deal does not include her Broadway music. Pophouse Entertainment Group first came into the music industry in 2014 when co-owners Conni Jonsson and Björn Ulvaeus (a founding member of the musical group ABBA), founded the company. Since then, the rapid growing Swedish entertainment company has been associated with widely recognised names including the Avicii Experience, partnering with Spotify, ABBA Voyage, Mamma Mia The Party, and now Cyndi Lauper.
Back in December last year, Pophouse Entertainment Group made a public announcement of a partnership with the US rock and roll icons KISS for their upcoming avatar show. Previously to this, Pophouse opened the ABBA Voyage virtual concert experience in London, UK. The deal with Cyndi Lauper states that Pophouse will “create new content and experiences to enrich Cyndi Lauper’s catalogue for fans old and new”.
In the press release about the massive deal, Cyndi Lauper said:
“Pophouse has impressed me with their commitment to maintaining and developing my professional life’s work and ensuring its legacy. Their creativity and vision, combined with my continued involvement via our unique joint venture is what is most exciting to me.”
The exact share number has not been disclosed to the public. A deal with a 1980’s music icon is sure to set the bar high with expectations. As part of the deal between Cyndi Lauper and Pophouse Entertainment Group, the entertainment company will now hold the majority share of the pop star’s publishing as well as royalties from recorded music. Cyndi Lauper has sold over 50 million records worldwide, and part of this deal includes some of her most well-known hits including ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’, ‘True Colors’, and songs that include Cyndi Lauper’s writing credits such as ‘Time After Time’ and ‘She Bop’.
The acquisition of the 1980’s music superstar’s catalogue does not include her Broadway music. Cyndi Lauper is best known on Broadway for her work on the hit musical Kinky Boots. She was the composer as well as the lyricist for the show, which opened back in 2012. Cyndi Lauper also wrote original songs for Spongebob Squarepants the Broadway musical which opened in 2017, and had songs featured in Matters Of The Heart which opened in late 2000.
