Thriving Through the Festive Performance Season: A Performer’s Guide to Balance and Joy

A Performer's Guide to Balance and Joy

Tis the season to be jolly. Or is it?

For performers, the festive season is a whirlwind of magic–and extra shows. This demands sacrifices that often go unacknowledged, with performers facing the reality of being thousands of families’ Christmas gifts, while simultaneously missing out on time with their own families. I know firsthand how challenging this can be, so here are some tips to help you thrive throughout this festive performance season.

Embrace Self-Care Amidst the Chaos

The festive season means even more hectic schedules, leaving little time for rest. Now more than ever is the time to prioritise self-care. Whether it’s a moment of meditation before a show, putting on your earphones to tune out when you’ve had enough, or simply a few deep breaths to centre yourself during a rehearsal, these small acts of self-care can make a huge difference.

Create Moments of Connection

While the festive season might keep you away from your loved ones, create pockets of connection whenever possible with your cast and company. Utilise technology to stay connected with your loved ones at home—video calls, messages, or even sharing snippets of your day can bridge the physical distance and keep those connections alive.

Establish Rituals for Grounding

Choose rituals that ground and centre you. Whether it’s a pre-show routine, a moment of reflection, or a gratitude practice, these rituals can anchor you amidst the chaos.

Fuel Yourself Wisely

Extra shows mean extra energy demands. Pay attention to your nutrition, ensuring you’re adequately fuelling your body to sustain the increased performance schedule. Eating consistently, incorporating nutritious snacks, and staying hydrated can make a significant difference in your stamina and reducing injury risk.

Prioritise Rest and Recovery

With back-to-back shows, rest often takes a backseat. But rest is an essential component of performance and recovery. Prioritise sleep during this season—whether it’s a power nap between shows or ensuring a proper wind-down routine post-performance to help you get a good night’s sleep.

Find Joy in the Moment

This season can be all about the hustle, but it is important to find moments of joy too. Embrace the magic of the performances, and allow yourself to be present in the magic you’re creating for your audience. But remember to create fun for yourself backstage too.

Support Each Other

Remember that your entire company is facing the same challenges you are. Support each other, share words of encouragement, and foster a sense of camaraderie. Sometimes, being vulnerable and sharing the challenges you are facing gives others permission to do the same.

Set Boundaries

Learn to say no when necessary, and carve out time for activities that rejuvenate you, whether it’s a hobby, a walk in nature, or simply time spent in solitude.

Celebrate Your Achievements

This time of year tends to make us more reflective. Embrace it. Take a moment to celebrate your achievements this year and acknowledge the challenges you have overcome. This helps build resilience and gets you excited for what’s to come in the new year.

Practice Gratitude

Science suggests that a gratitude practice can build our resilience, calm our nervous system, boost our immunity, and help us feel happier. Start by writing three things that you are grateful for at the end of each day. Whether it’s for the opportunity to perform, or the support of your colleagues, practicing gratitude can uplift your spirits and keep you going through this hectic season.

Navigating the festive performance season as a performer requires you to double down on taking care of your well-being. Embrace the magic of the stage, cherish the connections you create, and above all, remember to nourish your body and mind throughout all the hustle and bustle.
