The 10 Best Documentary Feature Films About Dance

The 10 Best Documentary Feature Films About Dance
A few weeks ago, I introduced you to my favorite documentaries about theatre. This time, I want to put the emphasis on dance. Here is a small collection for you. The 10 best documentary feature films about dance. Needless to say, this is highly subjective. These films are not on any official list, but rather my personal Top 10.
The documentaries are ordered from oldest to most recent. There are more recent dance documentaries as well of course. And countless others over the decades… which are waiting to be discovered by you, too.

1) The Dancer (1994)

Follows the young and gifted Katja Bjoerner through her years of intensive training at the Royal Swedish Ballet School. Witness how she develops into an international ballet star.

2) Mad Hot Ballroom (2005)

Mad Hot Ballroom is a documentary which follows three groups of New York City school children as they prepare for a citywide ballroom-dancing competition.

The documentary gives us an insight into the culture of ballroom dancing and its place in the public school system in New York.

We get to know the quirks, ambitions and lives of the participating 11-year-olds.

Full of heart and humor, Mad Hot Ballroom demonstrates how much of an impact dance can have on our lives, no matter our age.

3) Rize (2005)

In the early 1990s, a form of street dance took off in South Central Los Angeles known as clowning, founded by comic entertainer Tommy the Clown.

At birthday parties and events, a troupe of clowns would perform hip-hop dance routines, similar to breaking.

This colorful, fast-paced documentary delves deep into the subcultures of Clowning and Krumping in Los Angeles.

Directed by David LaChapelle, the film stars Lil’ C, Tommy the Clown, and Miss Prissy.

Even if you know nothing about either dance style, if you love dance, this film is for you.

4) Ballerina (2006)

The documentary chronicles the training, rehearsals, and day to day lives of five Russian ballerinas at different stages of their career.

Director Bertrand Normand does not shy away from the intense dedication, rigor, and pain behind the ballet. Sometimes, this movie is painful to watch.

Yet it is also inspiring, as Normand shows us the extraordinary grace and athleticism of some of the top ballerinas in the world.

5) Planet B-Boy (2007)

This fascinating documentary examines how breaking evolved from a New York City street dance into a global phenomenon.

Breakdancing often doesn’t get the respect it deserves. Planet B-Boy takes an in depth look at the culture.

It centers around five international crews who are all competing to win the Battle of the Year.

Lively, colorful, and surprisingly touching, this documentary will have you looking for breakdancing classes after watching it! I’m still twitching just thinking about it.

6) Dancing Across Borders (2010)

In this moving documentary, Director Anne Bass’sis discovers a young Cambodian dancer named Sokvannaara Sar performing with a small troupe in Angkor Wat.

She instantly recognizes his talent and arranges for him to travel to New York to audition for the School of American Ballet.

What follows is a tale of intense competition, passion, and overcoming the odds.

7) Pina (2011)

Pina is a beautiful documentary about contemporary dance choreographer Pina Bausch. Tragically, Pina passed away a few days before filming.

After delaying production, director Wim Wenders moved forward with filming, creating an achingly stunning tribute to the beloved German choreographer that is well worth watching.

In my humble opinion, if you only ever want to watch one documentary about dance, make sure it is this one.

8) First Position (2012)

First Position follows six young dancers bound for the Youth America Grand Prix in New York City. They are dreaming of professional careers.

The best part of watching this film nine years after its release is to know that many of these dancers have made it in this tough industry.

The documentary stars Michaela DePrince (now a soloist at the Dutch National Ballet), Aran Bell (now a corps dancer at ABT), Miko Fogarty (formerly with Birmingham Royal Ballet) and Joan Sebastian Zamora (now with the Joffrey Ballet).

9) Mr. Gaga (2015)

Award-winning documentary film maker Tomer Heymann spent eight years painstakingly filming acclaimed Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin. The artistic director of the renowned Batsheva Dance Company.

Heymann chronicles his life from his early years in the kibbutz to his rise to prominence. The movie has won awards at festivals worldwide. Once you see its intensity, you’ll know why.

10) Dancer (2016)

An in-depth look behind the scenes as well as into the thoughts of an extraordinary dancer.

Sergei Polunin is a brilliant ballet talent who questions his existence and his commitment to dance just as he is about to become a legend.

All of these movies can be found online through one or several streaming services. Enjoy!
