I’ve just adopted another cat. Much of my life revolves around the little feline beauties. Writing for TheatreArtLife, having worked in the entertainment industry, loving ballet, loving cats… I couldn’t help but wonder what I’d find if I simply searched for “cat ballet” online? If you are wondering now, too, let me share just six of my interesting (and rather hilarious) finds with you.
Besides the links below, it’s also worthwhile to simply go into Google picture search and enjoy the rather extensive collection of ballet cats which have already been collected online…
1) There is an entire book series called Ballet Cat
Seeing the titles, my instant favorite was No. 2 in the series:
Ballet Cat: Dance! Dance! Underpants!
In Goodreads, the content is described as follows:
Ballet Cat is getting her friend Butter Bear ready for her big ballet debut. “Leap, Butter Bear, leap!” Ballet Cat prompts. But Butter Bear would prefer to just point her toe. When Ballet Cat keeps pushing, Butter Bear gets hungry, then thirsty, then sleepy . . . The bottom line is that Butter Bear would rather do almost anything to avoid making a big leap. Why? Because her bottom is covered in silly underpants! This second entry in the Ballet Cat series will have beginning readers rolling on the floor with laughter.
2) Ballet Cat dances like nobody is watching
A quite remarkable photo series of a true talent.
Can be found on Gidypet as well as on Bored Panda.
The gifted dancer seems to live in Japan together with a whole bunch of other felines.
You can follow their adventures on Twitter.
However, there seems to be only the one dancer in the family.
3) There is an actual ballet term called Pas de Chat
Pas de chat is a classical ballet term meaning “cat’s step.” It gets its name because the step resembles how a cat jumps.
A dancer does a pas de chat by starting in fifth position with the right foot in back. The dancer pliés then jumps with the right leg going into a passé (also known as retiré) quickly followed by the left leg moving into passé. For a moment, the dancer is in the air with both legs in high passés (looking like a grande plié in fifth position but with pointed feet). The dancer then places their right foot on the floor first followed by the left back in front to fifth position. Pas de chat has variations including starting and ending from a fourth position.
The full explanation can be found on Ballet Hub.
4) Kitty Kat Ballerina ballet tutorial for kids
While we are already talking about Pas de Chat and other ballet positions and steps, why not go straight into some practice with this adorable ballet tutorial from Kitty Kat Ballet?
I was especially fond of the animated cats randomly crossing the screen and meowing in the background. These are fifteen minutes you will not regret. I promise!
5) The White Cat and Puss-in-Boots pas de deux
In this recording from the Royal Opera House in London, UK, you can enjoy seeing Elizabeth Harrod as the White Cat and Paul Kay as Puss-in-Boots dance in Act III of The Sleeping Beauty.
This was performed in the Royal Ballet 2011/12 Season.
6) Mischievous cat interrupts ballet teacher’s home class
Last but not least, this adorable content:
As American dancer Amelia Love Clearheart taught her first remote lesson from her living room, her mischievous cat Aurora decided to spontaneously leap into her arms for a quick snuggle.
Scroll down the article in Classic FM a bit to get to the high-resolution video.
I hope this made your day as much as it did mine. Happy day everyone!
