For the next few weeks, Frida Kahlo is the illustrious guest at Zurich’s newly established MAAG Light Hall. In fact, the immersive exhibition has been such a success thus far that it has been extended to run until 27th of February 2022. This unique exhibition of Frida Kahlo’s work is a world premiere, full of accessible symbolism and colourful exotic plants and animals, as well as a series of powerful self-portraits.
The new MAAG Light Hall is the first permanent museum in Switzerland to show only immersive exhibitions. Works by outstanding artists are illuminated, animated, set to music and projected on the walls, ceilings, and floors.
Frida Kahlo’s vibrant and intense paintings are perfectly suited for this kind of immersive experience. Her creations give glimpses into her life and are projected all around the visitors who move through the exhibition.
This kind of art presentation has an impact far greater than one could imagine. It is a firework for the senses.
Frida Kahlo’s paintings are presented using high-performance video projection, light effects, as well as acoustic effects.
Images are brought to life with 39 high-performance projectors. They are projected onto walls up to thirty-four meters long and ten meters high. And onto the ceiling as well as onto the floor of the large hall.
The 360° projection makes visitors feel as if they have been transported right inside of Frida Kahlo’s paintings.
Overall, the immersive production has a dramatic structure and tells the story of both the painter and the person Frida Kahlo.
A speaker in the role of the artist guides visitors through the exhibition with original quotes.
A specially composed soundtrack underlines the immersive staging acoustically.
Based on the model in Paris, the Atelier des Lumières, the MAAG Light Hall will in the future continue to present great artists and their famous works quite literally in a completely new light.
Adults, young adults, and children alike will be able to experience art in an entirely new way. A way possibly more attuned to the viewing habits of the new generations.
In lengthy negotiations, the joint venture responsible for this new museum in Zurich succeeded in acquiring the rights to Frida Kahlo’s pictures for these immersive purposes.
It is the first time that her works have been staged outside of Mexico in this fascinating way. Due to its great success, the exhibition Viva Frida Kahlo – Immersive Experience has now already been booked to be exhibited by other European cities as well.
The MAAG Music & Arts AG and the Zurich artist collective Projektil are behind the MAAG Light Hall project.
Historically, the MAAG building complex was the location of the MAAG Brothers Machine Factory AG until 2001. The buildings on the MAAG site are listed under “Other monuments” on the list of cultural assets in Zurich / District 5.
Since 2001, the MAAG Music & Arts AG has been operating the MAAG complex as a cultural hub with a theatre, event hall, and a bistro named K2.
The MAAG Light Hall is, in fact, just one building in a cluster of historical factory buildings now lending space to works of visual as well as performance art.
