The Black British Theatre Awards 2022 took place on 16th October, in a celebration of the stage’s finest talents. The awards are the UK’s first award show to celebrate the excellence and influence of Black performers and creatives in the theatre industry.
About the BBTAs
The Black British Theatre Awards (BBTAs) were launched in 2019, and are making a bigger impact and reach than ever before. The BBTAs were created to target the fantastic leadership of the theatre sector, celebrating the diverse talent that already exists in the UK, and championing the theatre pioneers whose contributions are well established, as well as supporting the young people coming from education into the Arts, to empower them to tell their stories and continue the movement. The BBTA website explains the importance of what the awards show represents, saying:
“As we continue to recover from the pandemic and acknowledge the response to the Black Lives Matter movement, the BBTAs have never been more important. The time is now to take action and the BBTAs is an opportunity to represent the exceptional Black British talent that exists in the UK.
2020 and 2021 have highlighted who is taking the issues of representation seriously, and continued support from our friends, partners and sponsors reflect those who are authentic in our collective mission to create real change and have embedded representation in their infrastructure.”
