The Golden Globes 2022 nominees have been announced amid controversy from recent years. Despite the upcoming ceremony being dropped by American broadcaster NBC, there have been conversations around the awards that have continued to ramp up over the last few years.
The controversy
This year saw the Hollywood Foreign Press Association heavily criticised, who are the group who decide on the winners. The LA times ran an investigation that alleged the group had conflicts of interest, favoured shows with a weighty financial backing that were able to splurge on the group, and also highlighted the fact that there were no Black members in the group and hadn’t been for twenty years.
The response that followed was one of outrage, with many in the industry speaking out and demanding better. Prior to the 2021 ceremony, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) released a statement that read:
“We are fully committed to ensuring our membership is reflective of the communities around the world who love film, TV and the artists inspiring and educating them. We understand that we need to bring in Black members, as well as members from other underrepresented backgrounds, and we will immediately work to implement an action plan to achieve these goals as soon as possible.”
The Golden Globes 2022
The ceremony for 2022 is scheduled for 9th January, however it is not clear if or how this will be broadcast and who may be involved due to the controversy, boycott and shunning of the awards following a lack of meaningful change – in fact, things continued to deteriorate for the HFPA throughout 2021.
In April, Philip Berk who was a member of the group and the former eight-term president had an email shared in which he described Black Lives Matter as a “racist hate movement.” Berk was removed, however the damage had been done. Media and streamers announced their boycott of the Golden Globes, with NBC announcing they too would be dropping the ceremony for 2022:
“We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. Assuming the organisation executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”

Looking to the future
We hope the HFPA reforms in a much more representative and positive way going forward, and so far it is reported that the group has welcomed 21 new members which includes six Black voters, although it is unclear how diverse the entirety of the group is overall at present.
Additionally, it appears there are stricter rules enforced on the group regarding accepting gifts, and that journalists from across the USA will now be eligible to become members. If all goes well, perhaps the 2023 Golden Globes can resume with the necessary improvements that make it more equitable and meaningful to those working in the industry.
