Dr. Carol Fischer Directs Final Play “Violet” at West Valley College

Category: News

Dr. Carol Fischer, a stalwart of the theater scene, is gearing up for her final directorial play, “Violet,” set to grace the stage at West Valley College in Saratoga, California. This production, premiering on April 19th, 2024, has music by Jeanine Tesori and script by Brian Crawley. Inspired by Doris Betts’ captivating short story, “The Ugliest Pilgrim,” “Violet” takes audiences on a transformative journey through the life of a young woman whose destiny was altered by a tragic axe accident.

As the curtains rise, audiences will be transported back to September 1964, a time fraught with historical significance. Against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Act and escalating tensions surrounding the Vietnam War, Fischer’s production delves into the individual struggles and triumphs of its characters, highlighting the universal yearning to be seen and loved for one’s true essence.

For Fischer, whose illustrious career spans over two decades, this production marks the culmination of a lifelong passion for theater. Having dedicated her talents to West Valley College since 1995, Fischer has served in various capacities, from costume design to stage management to lighting instruction. Yet, as she bids farewell to the stage, Fischer remains undaunted, eagerly embracing the prospect of new adventures and creative pursuits.

“Its not a scary thing to retire”

In a poignant director’s note, Fischer reflects on the timeless themes of “Violet,” urging audiences to find hope and inspiration in the human connections that transcend time and place.

With her characteristic warmth and wisdom, Fischer invites theatergoers to embark on a journey of self-discovery and empathy, reminding us of the enduring power of storytelling.

“The world of our musical is September 1964. President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act in July of that year; he also, in a push to subdue Communism, increased our presence in the Vietnam War, which up to that time had been marginal. (Personally, I entered high school in 1964 and those two particular historical issues affected much of my teens and early 20s.)

This story, although aware of that zeitgeist, focuses on very individual pain reflected in others’ responses and hurts. And those specifics display the universal need for a person to be seen for their heart, for their soul.

My hope is that you not only are touched by the performances, but also take with you renewed hope, and inspiration to look deeply at the essence of the human hearts inhabiting our world today in 2024, 60 years later, amid myriad world struggles, but with the same need to be seen…

…to be loved.

With joy, Carol”

Looking ahead, Fischer anticipates a vibrant “retirement” filled with travel, painting, and cherished moments with loved ones. While bidding adieu to academia, she remains open to the possibilities that lie ahead, ready to embrace the next chapter with enthusiasm and grace.

Don’t miss your chance to experience the magic of “Violet”, the final play under the expert direction of Dr. Carol Fischer at West Valley College.
