Back to the Future is Back – This Time Rocking the Stage!

Back to the Future is back – This Time Rocking the Stage!

Back to the Future – who hasn’t seen the movie? At least in my generation (ancient, I know) everyone has. Today, the story is just as exciting and fun as it was back in the Eighties when the movie came out. The story of traveling through time also has a timeless quality. It is no wonder that the entertainment industry has now picked up this marvel once more and turned it into a musical – currently playing at the Adelphi Theatre, in London’s West End.

For those of you who haven’t seen the movie or can’t quite remember what it was all about:

When Marty McFly finds himself transported back to 1955 in a time machine built by the eccentric scientist Doc Brown, he accidentally changes the course of history. Now he’s in a race against time to fix the present, escape the past and send himself… back to the future.

Adapting this iconic story for the stage are the movie’s creators Bob Gale (Back to the Future trilogy) and Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump).

The production features original music by multi-Grammy winners Alan Silvestri (Avengers: Endgame) and Glen Ballard (Michael Jackson’s Man in the Mirror). Alongside hit songs from the movie including The Power of Love, Johnny B. GoodeEarth Angel and Back in Time.

The set design is magnificent in its details and was designed by Tim Hatley.

Tony Award-winning director John Rando leads the Tony and Olivier Award-winning creative team.

Thus far, reviews have been positive throughout. Everyone wants to come along for the ride, head straight into adventure, back and forwards into the future!

Especially after our long stint of being deprived of live entertainment experiences due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

An article in TheatreNews states, “The familiarity of the film clearly makes for an enjoyable experience with the script staying true to the original. The show leaps from scene to scene with impressive speed, the pace never wavering.”

Technology has come a long way. Thus, it is possible today to translate the movie into a dazzling stage performance.

This is done with a huge LED back-screen, graphic projections, and a myriad of special effects.

Also, the original movie soundtrack has lost nothing of its appeal. It offers a perfect mix of feel-good Eighties songs which will have people dancing in their seats in no time.

According to several online news sources in the UK, the actors on stage are splendid as well. Leaving nothing to be desired.

Doc Brown is played by Roger Bart. Apparently, the seasoned actor’s charisma and wit propel the production to an even higher standard. He delivers a modern, vivid version of Doc Brown whilst staying true to the origins of the character.

The other main character, Marty McFly, is played by Olly Dobson who also manages to breathe new life into the classic character he is portraying.

Marco Gandolfi’s review in TheatreNews is outright euphoric. Especially, the conclusion of his experiences whilst seeing the show makes me want to buy a plane ticket to London right away.

“A stunning translation of an epic film that seemingly knows no limits. Some classic timeless lines, and many new ones expertly delivered even referencing infectious disease when dreaming of the future 2020. I loved it, it’s very hard to see how anyone could not.”

Well, London, get ready. As soon as I can, I’ll be on my way across the channel, and straight into the Adelphi Theatre. I am getting ready to go Back to the Future!
