Opera Hack $5,000 Grant Funding Is Open TheatreArtLife

Opera Hack is a first-of-its-kind gathering of artists, designers, and technology experts from around the world dedicated to the advancement of the art form of opera. Teams of artists and technicians will collaborate and compete with proposals to meet challenges in the opera industry. Participants will have the opportunity to network with creators from different cities internationally to create multidisciplinary teams and bring forward innovative ideas that can advance the production and presentation of opera.

About Opera Hack

Opera Hack 1.0 (2018-2020)

Led by Project Director Angel Mannion, and San Diego Opera (SDO)’s General Director David Bennett the first OPERA HACK was held in 2018 with support from an OPERA America Innovation Grant, bringing together a diverse group of experts from theater and technology to brainstorm and develop new ideas to enhance the building blocks of opera. Forty multidisciplinary artists, designers, and engineers came together in San Diego, CA in July, 2019 and a total of $40,000 was awarded to three winning teams to support the research and development of their ideas.

Opera Hack 2.0 (2020-2021)

Opera Hack were honoured to receive another Innovation Grant, which allowed them to apply learning from the first OPERA HACK to further identify and address some of the industry’s most important problems with new technologies.

OPERA HACK 2.0:
1) Conducted an industry-wide survey to identify challenges currently facing the industry.
2) Held an online, international hackathon to discover technological solutions for the identified challenges.
3) Awarded $15,000 in total to up to (3) three innovative proposals for solutions to these challenges.
4) Provided an online platform to host all proposals (with permission) so that companies may contact the creators for further development.

The results of this survey were used to identify challenges that the hackathon participants were given for a month-long event (June 4 – July 2, 2021).
