The Digital Age Of Private Lessons

Digital Age

In this digital age, it seems with so much of our lives lived on a device or computer screen that it was only a matter of time before things like voice and acting lessons went online. A trend started a few years ago of private lessons via Skype, FaceTime or other video chat programs. I have to say that I was a little skeptical of such methods.

I questioned if I would be able to service my clients in the same way. Could an online lesson be just as valuable as one conducted via video chat? Simple answer, Yes! Quickly, I began to understand the value of being able to teach online lessons.

The biggest appeal is the flexibility. I can schedule lessons any time of the day or night, weekends and even on vacation if I need to.

No longer am I shackled to the business hours of the studio I work with or student holidays. So here are some questions you might have, because I had them too.

Will I get the same service as in-person lessons?

The answer is yes, with one small difference, the instructor will not be physically in the room with you. So other than getting to share the air in the room you are getting the same exact service that in-person clients get. Instructors can still send material, give advice and coach via an online outlet. I have some clients that feel like it is even more personal because it feels more like talking with a friend than an appointment.

What are the benefits?

The biggest benefit is flexibility in scheduling.

It doesn’t matter where you are located, private coaches can video in and give you the assistance you need, when you need.

Let’s say that you are traveling to an audition. If you need a lesson the next morning right before the big audition, you can video chat and your private coach can help you prepare. The same is true if your private coach may be traveling but still able to conduct lessons. Lesson times are also a little more flexible because you can video chat at 5:00am or 11:00pm and not have to worry about leaving your house, school or office. Let’s say you have late hours because you are in tech for a show, but you really want one more lesson before opening night. Well, online lessons allow you to video chat and have a lesson at midnight if needed.

So, let’s say that you are still on the fence about online lessons. Let me leave you with this. Do you think it is better to video chat with a private instructor that you like and has the credentials to get you what you need, or meet in person with someone that you might not connect with or may not have the qualifications you desire in a private instructor? With so much of the industry going to online lessons don’t feel like you are sacrificing by having to have online lessons, know that you are just one of thousands that are already reaping the benefits of this type of service.
