Coldplay Releases Sustainability Report

Coldplay Releases Sustainability Report

The British pop band Coldplay releases sustainability report, and they are the first band ever in the world to do so! This band that has been on pop charts for the last 20 years voluntarily produced their sustainability report after the band set out to reduce their carbon emissions by half. While out on their latest tour, the band has nearly done just that.

Setting a new standard for entertainers across the globe, Coldplay’s obvious commitment to environmental issues has caught the public’s attention and not just from their fans. In the band’s mission statement, they make it clear that they want to share their challenges and successes in this endeavour with the public. Coldplay is working with MIT’s Environmental Solutions Initiative by giving the institute the data they collect from their tour and having MIT assess and validate the results. So far, MIT has confirmed that Coldplay has reduced their carbon emissions by 47% (compared to their last tour in the years 2016-2017), almost precisely what the band set their sights on for a goal.

Due to this stark improvement from their last tour, Coldplay has decided to run the entire show, including audio, lights, lasers, etc., on an electric battery system. By releasing this report willingly, the band has set the standard for others in the entertainment industry to do the same. This also allows for people outside the entertainment industry to begin to understand just how much of everything is used while touring. Flights, catering, lighting, even social responsibility all have to be taken into account when on the road. Coldplay has definitely highlighted all of that and more in their report.

The band states that they mostly fly commercial and all the flights pay the surcharge for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) instead of constantly flying private to quickly get from one city to the next. The band goes on to say that they use reusable and/or recyclable material for things like their stage construction, LED lights, and they even throw biodegradable confetti out of their cannons. If all of that weren’t enough, the band has gone a step further and asks their fans to partake in their green project. By offering discounts to all of those who attend their shows, Coldplay has asked fans to use low carbon transportation methods such as public transport, ride sharing, or even walking by foot for those lucky enough to be close enough.

Some ways the band has ingeniously reduced their carbon footprint are:

Used stages that are powered by bikes placed around stadiums

A system in place to plant 1 tree for every ticket sold, which has resulted in roughly 5 million trees being planted so far

Had a kinetic dance floor that generated energy at their concerts

A donation of thousands of unused meals and toiletries from the tour to those in need

A power for the shows production crew that generated 100% renewable energy

You can keep up to date with Coldplay’s touring sustainability here.
