Hadestown is back on the West End, five years after the Greek tragedy left. The epic dual love story telling of the iconic Orpheus and Eurydice, and Persephone and Hades is back on the West End starting 10th of February, 2024 with a stellar cast. Tickets for Hadestown went on sale starting earlier this year in late May, 2023. The last time the Tony winning musical Hadestown was in the city of London was from Nov 2nd, 2018 to January 26th, 2019 at the National Theatre. Now the audience will experience the underworld at the Lyric Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue. A mere fourteen minutes from their last venue via the Bakerloo line.
An official cast for the returning of Hadestown was recently confirmed and is absolutely star-studded. Transfering from film, Dónal Finn will be playing the lead role of Orpheus along with his leading lady Grace Hodgett-Young as Eurydice. Dónal Finn has most recently been The Wheel of Time but made appearances in other films and series. Grace Hodgett-Young is currently in Sunset Boulevard as Betty. Melanie La Barrie who will be flying in as the messenger of the gods, Hermes, will be transferring from her current role in Wicked. The iconic underworld couple Persephone and Hades will be portrayed by Gloria Onitiri and Zachary James. Gloria will also be coming back to live theatre after some time in the film industry along with Zachary. The three Fates will be Madeline Charlemagne, Allie Daniel and Bella Brown. Madeline is a graduate from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Allie was most recently a part of Southwark Playhouse’s How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Bella Brown recently graduated from Arts Educational Schools and made her stage debut only earlier this year.
Lauren Azania, Tiago Dhondt Bamberger, Beth Hinton-Lever, Waylon Jacobs, and Christopher Short will play the Workers. The Swings include Lucinda Buckley, Ryesha Higgs, Miriam Nyarko, and Simon Oskarsson.
The last time Hadestown was on the West End, Orpheus was played by Reeve Carney, who is set to return to Chelsea Table + Stage. Eurydice was portrayed by the brilliant Eva Noblezeda, who most recently featured in AppleTV+ animated film, Luck. Persephone was immortalised by Amber Gray, who as of last year played Banquo in Macbeth on Broadway. And of course, the King himself Hades was Patrick Page who has also since moved on to animated movies with his role as Memory in Quantum Cowboys.
The reviews of Hadestown when it was last on the West End were quite successful despite its short running. The show got 4 out of 5 stars with fans hopeful of a return after its sold-out run at the National Theatre in 2018. With the flapper resembling costumes and blues style music, the audience is immediately taken aback to a time of the late 1920s – early 1930s. So the audience doesn’t get confused with the age old stories of ancient Greece, your host Hermes is there to narrate. The show originally started as a concert piece by Anaï Mitchell and has since grown a vast following with fans worldwide.
