About Bad Cinderella

With a slightly different name adapted for Broadway, due to associations with pantomimes and Disney that allegedly confused British audiences, a few tweaks are also rumoured to have been made to the musical in addition to the title change.

Bad ‍Cinderella features an updated story and book by Oscar-winning screenwriter Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman, “Killing Eve”), with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by David Zippel (City of Angels). The creative team is also reported to include director Laurence Connor (Les Misérables), with choreography from JoAnn M. Hunter (School of Rock), set and costume design by Gabriela Tylesova, sound design from Gareth Owen, lighting design from Bruno Poet, hair and wig design by Luc Verschueren, and features co-musical supervisor John Rigby.

Casting is by Tara Rubin Casting. The musical is produced on Broadway by Christine Schwarzman and Darren Johnston of No Guarantees and Really Useful Group. Wagner Johnson Productions is the executive producer.

In the exceptionally beautiful kingdom of Belleville, the fields are idyllic, the prince is charming, and the townsfolk are ravishing. Only one stubborn peasant stands in the way of absolute perfection: Cinderella. To the flawless residents and royals of Belleville, this damsel IS the distress.

Cinderella’s only friend in Belleville is the equally overlooked Prince Sebastian. When his older brother, Prince Charming, mysteriously disappears, he is thrust into the spotlight. As the new royal heir, Prince Sebastian must choose a bride at the ball and live unhappily ever after. With the prospect of losing the only person she’s ever cared for to the crown, Cinderella pays a visit to the Godmother, who can solve any problem… for a price.

Bad Cinderella is set to open at the Imperial Theatre on Broadway in February 2023, with tickets now on sale.
