Music legend Dave Grohl has released new music under the band name ‘Dream Widow’, and stars in the new comedy horror film Studio 666. The thrash band is actually Grohl and Foo Fighters, with ‘Dream Widow’ being their moniker in the movie.
Speaking to The Howard Stern Show about the film plot to Studio 666, which follows Foo Fighters as they move into a haunted mansion in Encino, California, to record their 10th album, Grohl explained:
“The premise of the movie is that we move into this house, I have writer’s block, I’m totally uninspired, I can’t come up with anything, and I wind up finding this creepy basement. And I go into the basement, I find this tape by a band from 25 years ago that recorded there. And there’s this song that, if recorded and completed, the f***ing demon in the house is unleashed, and then, whatever, all hell breaks loose.”
The group teased fans in mid-February with the single March of the Insane, which gave us an idea of what was to come from the album. In something of a departure musically, the track is much heavier than what Grohl is typically known for, leaving rock for a sound that is decidedly metal.
Speaking about the single, Grohl continued:
“March of the Insane belongs to Dream Widow, the ill-fated band that died at the hands of its possessed singer. And we come in 25 years later to record, having no idea what happened 25 years ago, and I start becoming possessed by the spirit of the guy from 25 years ago and the spirit of the house. But this song, March of the Insane, this is their lost record. This is the record they were making before their singer murdered them.”
The full album, Medicine at Midnight, has now been released by Foo Fighters, and contains tracks that have dropped over the last few years as well as the new ‘Dream Widow’ songs. The record is a real melting pot of influences and genres – every track gives the listener the feeling of walking into a new room at a party.
It’s a unique take on making an album that Grohl embraces, as he elaborated to Rolling Stone:
“I have my favorites. You’ll hear a lot of those influences in ‘Lacrimus dei Ebrius’ [a 13-minute metal epic performed in the film] because for that song, I put maybe four or five of these sections together in this big, long thing. Some of it sounds like [doom-metal pioneers] Trouble; some of it sounds like Corrosion of Conformity; some of it has a Kyuss vibe.”
For Foo Fighters fans who can’t get enough of the new material, the band are currently on tour in North America before heading to Central and South America from March 2022, then head back to the USA, before venturing over to Europe from June – July. Barely stopping, the Foos are then back to North America for the final run that lasts until October of 2022, so there are plenty of opportunities for good times to be had with the band this year.
