Global Citizen Live is a 24-hour global broadcast taking place in September that is aiming to “unite the world to defend the planet and defeat poverty”. The upcoming event has been described as “simultaneous live music events featuring the world’s greatest artists, activists and world leaders at iconic locations across the globe”.
Global Citizen are an anti-poverty charity, and they previously hosted the ‘Vax Live’ online streamed concert in May, raising £214 million to assist global vaccine efforts. Artists included Foo Fighters, Jennifer Lopez and H.E.R as well as cameo spots from President Joe Biden and Prince Harry.
Global Citizen made an announcement in mid-July that their new “once-in-a-generation” show will go ahead on 25th September around the world with performances and live events taking place in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America, and will air on ABC, ABC News Live, BBC, FX, iHeartRadio, Hulu, YouTube, Twitter, and more.

Join fellow Global Citizens, historic artists, and leaders from around the world to defend the planet and defeat poverty. This 24-hour event is a part of our campaign, a Recovery Plan for the World, which focuses on COVID-19, ending the hunger crisis, resuming learning for all, protecting the planet; and advancing equity for all.
The list of performing artists has also been released. The eclectic A-list of performers includes:
Adam Lambert, Alessia Cara, Andrea Bocelli, Angélique Kidjo, Billie Eilish, BTS, Burna Boy, Camila Cabello, Christine and the Queens, Coldplay, Davido, Demi Lovato, DJ Snake, Doja Cat, Duran Duran, Ed Sheeran, Femi Kuti, Green Day, H.E.R., Hugh Jackman & Deborra-lee Furness, Keith Urban, Lang Lang, Lizzo, Lorde, Metallica, Rag’n’Bone Man, Ricky Martin, Shawn Mendes, The Lumineers, The Weeknd, Tiwa Savage, and Usher, with more acts to be announced in coming weeks.
Ahead of the show, fabulous falsetto singer The Weeknd made a statement explaining his support for the event and why it meant so much to him, saying:
“It is very important to me to be a part of this historic event to spread awareness and encourage action toward helping the people of Ethiopia during this devastating humanitarian crisis they are faced with. It’ll be an honour to perform and help bring support to these citizens who are suffering so severely.”
While Geoffrey Onyeama, Foreign Minister of Nigeria, added:
“As we humans spend billions of dollars in search of newer worlds in outer space, Global Citizen Live brings us back down to earth by reminding the global community that charity should begin at home and we must preserve our earth and be our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. We owe it to ourselves and generations yet unborn. Space can wait!”
